Fun @ Bloggerfest
Azrael Colladilla in the house. |
I am sorry for posting this quite late. I had a lot of backlogs and it had coincide with Holy Week where I had to spend time back in the province. But as they all say, it's best to be late than never. Where do I begin my blog post about the bloggerfest? Thunderbird Resort in Binangonan Rizal where the bloggerfest was held was truly breathtaking. Imagine seeing the entire Metro Manila right before your eyes. It's also quite a long trip from Makati, where the shuttle buses had been waiting. It was a bit sad that my good friend Vix wasn't able to come. Her son Jared had a cold and of course, family comes first. So no matter how Mommy Vix would love to come and attend, she had to stay at home to take care of her little one. Even my friend Momo Adam could not make it that day, she was suffering from colds, cough and headache.
It was a good thing, other blogger friends of mine like Ia Adam-Lim, Millette Sison and Daryll Dial-Dillena were present. They were enough to save the day, so to speak. Our jaw dropped when the announcement of video contest winners were called. The Nuffnang Extraordinary best video winner had brought home a whopping P100,000! Not only that, he gets to spend days at the Thunderbird Resorts as well. We had a notion that, if we only knew how to shoot and edit videos, we could also come up with a concept of our own and perhaps be able to join.
There were also a lot of speakers who shared their expertise and knowledge on blogging styles and how to attract traffic etc. Neophyte bloggers like me were all ears as each speaker explained briefly how to make a good blog or become a better blogger.

Bloggers Millette Sison , Moi and Resly George Amador at the Casino Fiesta. |
We were also given special coupons to use for the Fiesta Casino. For attendees of Casino 101 seminar, we were given another P100 worth of coupon. As you can see in the photo above, fellow bloggers truly enjoyed the evening. Darryl Dial-Villena won P500++ from the casino slot machine while Ate Millette Sison won P200++ in the same slot machine. The three of them had all won in the raffle, it was just me who was an unfortunate soul--for I had not won anything...Except perhaps for new friends like Ruthilicious, Dennis Angulo and David D' Angelo. I also had the opportunity to meet people like Ms. Mhel Pixels Ignacio who was friendly online and even friendlier and prettier up close.
The Bloggerfest Bag |
I'd like to thank Mr. Azrael Colladilla for organizing an event such as this. i had so much fun at the Bloggerfest that when I realized I have not taken photos of the resort, it was already dark outside and too late. I was also glad that my bus seat mate, Joyce Anne Bolalin, who's a budding photographer won one of the top raffle prizes (yes, an overnight stay for two at Thunderbirds Resort), I'd like to believe my good luck had rubbed off on her, the very reason why I had not won anything that night. (Just kidding!)
I hope to see you guys again soon. And hopefully, I could win next time...
The Day I met my ex's wife
It was that easy. I had seen him again after more than eight years and I had finally met his wife. He seemed happier now than he ever was, and I could honestly say I am happy for him. But somehow, I don’t understand why I had this strange feeling of envy. I had spent the last decade all by myself, not seriously thinking if I’d actually consider becoming an old maid soon or whatever. I had had my focus on raising Kyle and helping my Mom, that thinking about my future was the least priority of all. Until this incident came…
I was extremely hurt the last time I fell in love. It was I who called it quits, but it was a decision I had to do because I wanted to prevent people from getting hurt, especially the ones I loved. It was like choosing to save my family over the relationship I had with my ex. No matter how painful, I knew I had made the right decision when I did that. Things did not come easily for me though. I had lost my identity, my sense of self, of what things really meant to me. I had lost my interest in life and lost focus on achieving personal goals as well.
Don’t get me wrong though, I do not say that I am still in love with my ex. I honestly don’t think so. But I do envy him because he’s got a family of his own now. He’s got someone that takes care of him and that pretty much makes him happy. Okay, I’ve got Kyle and Mommy in my life. But as human, I’d like to believe I need to be loved as well. I’ve been praying for that someone to come into my life. And I hope that when he does, my entire family would be embracing him with both hands. I’m not getting any younger, but I still believe in serendipity. Time starts zipping by, if I’m meant to be single all my life, then maybe I’d just have to accept it whole heartedly. But I won’t stop praying and discerning, that somewhere somehow, there’s someone who’s going to be the answer to my prayers.
And to my ex, I hope you and your wife will finally have a child of your own. I’m wishing you both happiness and contentment. Thank you for teaching me how to love unconditionally and learning how to forgive and truly forget. Please do pray for me that I may finally found my place under the sun. God bless!

Taking Example: Parents as good role models
Role models surround us. Those closest to us--parents, spouse, siblings, relatives, and friends--have a powerful impact. Influential people also include religious leaders, teachers, coaches, bosses, co-workers. Our culture, the world in which we live affect us, too.
learning how to learn from example is important since certain moments change lives. But we must not follow anyone blindly. "Never idealize others," says author Leo Buscaglia. "They will never live up to your expectations," he warns. This is a constant fear of parents; that their children idolize celebrities or athletes who send them a mixed message.
Jan Faull, an educator and author, advises parents that at "age 10, a child is old enough to understand that people are complex and have many dimensions." She says that if an athlete a child admires has been in the news for troubling behavior, parents should discuss with their children why they look up to that person.
Acknowledge the player's amazing free throws, incredible record, and great charity work--but also point out bad off-court choices, " she continues. Children may be disappointed to find that a superstar has feet of clay, but they might also realize that their "hero" doesn't really deserve their adulation or emulation.
Without introducing a wholesome range of good examples for young people, "you are deferring to what's on television," noted Dr. Antonette K. Yancey, co-author of a study on young people and role models. Dr. Yancey advises parents to "make sure there's a diversity of images available in your home--in all books, magazines, artwork.
It takes a village to raise a child--is good but it needs to be extended. I say it takes a tribe to raise a child...If you don't pass on accumulated wisdom and experience, where does the child get it?
Growing up with a single mom, my aunts were hanging out by the windows of our home, looking after us kids in the street...I couldn't get into trouble by this network of aunts and uncles and cousins, and when you were caught, the speed of my relatives brought it to my Mom and Grandma for retribution before I even made it home.
It's known that children who have positive role models are more likely to succeed at school, have higher self-esteem, and are less likely to fall into substance abuse.
What they see is what you get... it is indeed difficult to be a good role model. Good luck!

Mcdonald's Kiddie crew Summer Workshop
See those huge smile in Kyle? |
Kyle had always wanted to join the McDonald’s Kiddie Crew Workshop for the longest time. Perhaps he was about 3 or 4 years old when he first learned about it. But back then, aside from thinking he was too young to follow instructions, I thought, what’s fun about working in a fast food? So I did not let him join.
Every summer that followed thereafter, I would either have something different in mind which I’d think would be more interesting than becoming a kiddie crew, say an arts and craft lessons, piano or sports related activity like basketball clinic—activities that would make Kyle’s summer productive. All through those years, Kyle never ceases to ask if he would be allowed to become a kiddie crew.
The backpack and ID that comes with the fee. |
Kids are preparing for an art activity. |
For this particular summer, Kyle and I had a heart-to-heart talk. I’ve always made it a point to let him speak his mind out so we could both compromise before we arrive at a decision. I believe we communicate better this way. Since he’s now eight and an incoming Grade four, I asked him what he wanted to do and how is he going to spend his summer vacation. I’m no longer surprised when he mentioned about the kiddie crew workshop again. He had actually thought I’m going to beg off for what seemed like the nth time—but he told me he was glad later that he had tried to ask.
Yes, I finally gave in to his desire and made him join McDonald’s Kiddie Crew workshop at the branch nearest us—Metrolane. I never thought it would be cute seeing kids greeting you with genuine smiles and eagerness on their faces saying, “Welcome to Mcdonald’s, or after serving your meal they would altogether shout, “Thank you for coming, See us again.” Kyle even had a batchmate as young as three years old.
He's ready to take on the counter's job. |
"Can I get your order, Ma'am?" |
The McDonald’s Kiddie Crew Workshop is a 5-day summer program specially designed for kids to enjoy and have fun while learning through different activities. For each workshop day, Kiddie Crew members will get to experience the fun of greeting guests, manning the restaurant and drive-thru counters through on-floor training; showcase their skills through creative art workshops, and learn the importance of different values, from hardwork, discipline to teamwork, through values formation lessons and story telling activities. More than the fun activities lined up, the workshop is also a great way for kids to meet and make new friends.
The workshop’s fee is P550.00—inclusive of meals, uniform t-shirt, cap, backpack and completion certificate. Registration is ongoing until May 6, 2011. Remaining workshop schedule will be on April 25-29, May 2-6, May 9-13, May 16-20. A series of grand graduation will be held in major cities all over the country to recognize the achievements of all Kiddie Crew members and treat them to a day filled with exciting booths, games and tons of prizes.
There's nothing to worry for there's an "Ate" from McDonald's to help you out. |
Coloring Mcdonald's drawing during workshop proper. |
The best part is making friends. |
There's Ms. Mimi doing a storytelling. |
And since I could clearly see in Kyle’s face that he’s enjoying his Kiddie Crew workshop at McDonalds, I might consider letting him join again next year. He went home the other day telling me stories of him manning the restaurant’s counter. He was able to realize that it was no joke to please every customer. Kyle says, “You really have to act fast, Atching (yes, he calls me that way, it’s my petname). It was quite difficult but it’s really fun to do.” With such statement, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day my dear Kyle would be applying for work at a fast food joint like McDonalds.
To apply, ask the manager-in-charge at any participating McDonald’s outlet near you or visit www.mcdonalds.com.ph
No, He wants to ride as delivery guy, but he can't drive yet so I allowed him to pose. |

Purple Plum Fairy Summer Giveaway
It’s officially summer. There’s nothing fun than having a summer getaway with the entire family. But before you head off to the beach, remember to take all the essentials with you so you’re prepared for anything. I have here my own list of stuff a mommy must-have during travels.
You could win one of these tubes... |
Sunblock/Sunscreen—Your kids and babies will surely love to swim for hours. And as mommies, we’d want to make sure that every inch of our child is protected by the sun. I particularly love Banana Boat’s Baby Sunscreen Lotion in SPF50. It’s got both UVA and UVB spectrum protection and is enriched with Aloe Vera and vitamin E to help keep baby’s skin soft. It’s fragrance-free and water resistant. Apply the lotion evenly at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply often or as needed. However, you need to consult your physician before using this product on children under six months of age.
Shades/sunglasses—I have a small collection of shades and I see to it that I make use of them during summer. UVA rays penetrate our eyes causing degenerative changes in the retina. Wear sunglasses and ask your doctor to prescribe one for your kids. Sunglasses are used to protect our eyes but it’s also great especially when you need to take naps during long trips.
Bring some fun beach toys with you. Nothing too fancy, just a plastic pail and shovel will keep your little tots busy and happy!
Flip-flops/sandals—Never walk barefooted on the beach. Wearing flip-flops or sandals are your protection from the hot sand, broken shells, bottle caps, and other sharp-edged trash hidden in the sand.
First Aid Kit—It’s always a must-have especially when the entire family travels out-of-town. We have a stock of medicines for nausea, povidone-iodine, alcohol, gauze and other things needed during first aid.
Arm floaters/Kick boards/life vests—We don’t rely on these stuff because adult supervision is still the best way to keep our kids safe in the water so we keep an eye on them. However, these life savers make them have more fun in the water so we still bring them.
Books/iPODs/Portable Game Consoles—I never travel without a good book in hand. I make sure to keep a day or two for reading when I travel. For kids who aren’t into reading, a portable game console, mp3 or an iPOD may be your other options. I recommend Bob Ong’s latest book in my favorite color, what else, but in purple covers will keep you glued to your seats.
A reliable map—I had a very interesting travel in Baguio last year because it was easier for us to navigate the town proper using a reliable map. Since we did not get lost, we were able to access all alternative routes to avoid traffic and we’re able to visit our all in our itineraries, thereby saving time.
Snacks and lots of it—In order to prevent starvation, we need to bring in loads of snack during travels. Don’t forget to bring in the wet tissue wipes as well and hand sanitizers.
Bathing suits, board shorts, sarongs…the works! You get the picture. But you have to be sure to wax those bikini lines as well as your legs for that extra oomph. Body Natur’s mid-warm roll on wax and cellulose strips is your best friend during the summer season. It’s microwavable, and it’s so easy to do. Just pop the roll-on into the oven for 20 seconds, apply and put on the depilation strips, voila, you’re a flawless goddess!
Vacationing with our children need not be stressful. It doesn’t have to be a disaster; in fact, you can build some of your best family memories at the beach! Just be sure to come prepared and let your family enjoy every minute of it.
If you have been my follower since last year, you would know that I have actually started my blog in February 2010. But I’ve been too lazy to write anything until October 2010 where I’ve started to blog seriously. So as my post-blog anniversary gift to my loyal followers/friends, I’m having a summer giveaway.
I’ll be raffling it off via fishbowl. And to be fair, I’ll ask someone to pick the winners names. He or she would be someone who does not have any idea about blogging or knows any of the bloggers.
This contest is open for Metro Manila residents only. Provincial residents who would like to join must make be willing to meet-up in Quezon City in case they’ve won. Winners will be notified via email and mobile numbers. Winners must be willing to meet up to be able to claim their prizes. Prizes not claimed within 60 days prior to notice will be forfeited. The author will not be held liable for unclaimed prizes. Contest ends on May 21, 2011.
Here’s how to join:
1. Publicly follow Purple Plum Fairy via GFC (Google Friend Connect).
2. Like Purple Plum Fairy on Facebook
3. Publicly follow Security Blanket and Soulful Travels via GFC.
4. Subscribe via e-mail (you have to confirm your subscription once you receive the message in your inbox)
4. Blog about this giveaway and link back to this post.
5. When you did all the first steps, kindly fill out this form to make tracking and tallying the votes easy enough for me.
Alter Space: One Planet, One Home—Save it!
My own planet to save on Alter Space apps. |
People all around the world are becoming more conscious today that we need to appreciate, as well as protect our fragile ecosystem. It is especially important to teach children, whose future we are blithely destroying, how to be good stewards of the earth we merely borrowed from our Creator.
We should be responsible enough to train them not to litter, not to waste water, electricity or fuel, to show them how to re-use paper and plastic articles, etc.—not only by instructing them, but more importantly, by example.
Let us plant not only trees but also a seed in the minds of tomorrow’s caretakers that will bear the fruit of salvation for the earth. The Lord’s gifts are bountiful but we have not heeded His voice on how to take care for and share it.
you can even view virtual friends playing the same game. |
I recently came across this online game on the social networking Facebook called Alter Space. This game explains what carbon footprints are and will further explain on how one can save the environment sans the boring lecture! Alter Space is the first Filipino-made environmental awareness game on Facebook that teaches you how to go green. You do daily activities like eating and sleeping except that you have to conserve as much energy as you can! You need to have a lifestyle that helps reduce the effects of global warming, climate change, and carbon emissions. What’s great about this online game is, aside from learning environmental-awareness in a cool fun way, you also get a chance to win excellent prizes and gadgets. Think you can do it, planeteer? Check out the game at http://www.facebook.com/AlterSpaceGame.
your own planet depends upon you. |
We should be thankful to AboitizPower who came up with this brilliant concept. Kids, yuppies, and even those young-at-heart using Facebook will surely enjoy playing this online game while learning practical tips on earth-friendly living.
We could all be heroes of our planet. It is interesting to note that people nowadays are getting more active and concerned in “earth-saving”. The most important thing that we should bear in mind is to “do what we can, where we are, and with what we have.” So even if you’re young, or old, a professional, a housewife, a student or a grandparent, you can do a great deal from where you are and with what little or great resources you have.
A happy virtual me. |
In the late 1800’s George Elliot wrote: What do we live for, if not to make life less difficult for each other? How sad if, instead of helping hands, we had busy tongue, curious ears and idle fingers. We live in a busy and oftentimes uncaring world. If each one can reach out of ourselves to ease another’s burden, add life and enthusiasm to a seemingly dreary circumstance, or be a conduit of God’s love, we would be the better for it. Stop, look, and listen. There are opportunities all around us. Take part in saving the planet today.
Muntinlupa has ordained its city as plastic-free. All stores there are now obligated to replace their plastics with paper, cartons and reusable bags. Encourages shoppers to bring their own bags. Every Wednesday in most stores is BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag). I sincerely hope it becomes an everyday affair. I patronize companies that had environment-friendly way of retailing. Whenever I shop, I use bags or paper bags instead of plastic ones.
Malls like Ayala does help by not providing plastic bags on certain days. |
Every green plant helps reduce the greenhouse effect by absorbing Carbon Dioxide. Plant a tree in your backyard, or work with your neighbors to plant around your area. Wait ‘till sundown to water your garden so less of the water will evaporate. Scatters seeds to help produce new plants and trees and also to feed birds.
Did you know that producing a ton of recycled paper use half the energy, half the water, results in 74% less air pollution, 35% less water pollution, and saves 17 pulp tree? Use paper efficiently. Chlorine bleaching of paper pulp to come up with white paper produces highly dangerous chemicals that threaten the environment. As much as possible, use unbleached paper products. Last Christmas, my family participated in a Belen (nativity) making contest and we used recycable leaves, hay, twigs, and old newspapers. Dried leaves can be used as fertilizers. I encourage my nephew to use scrap paper as his Math scratch paper. Make notebooks from unused pages of old notebooks.
Re-use scrap paper as charcoals!
Buy products in reusable containers, doesn’t use spray nets, don’t waste paper and don’t buy foods in styrofoams.
Let’s segregate trash and don’t use aerosol. An Asian Development Bank study in 2003 reported that we can save P3.6 billion if we all segregated our trash. That amount can build 7,220 school classrooms. I personally do my own envelope from recycled papers. I bought a paper-recycling kit to use on my own used paper.
Don’t throw egg cartons. Place inside drawers and use as a sorter for pins, earrings, or sewing materials. Re-use old newspapers to make baskets, used illustration boards to make jewelry boxes and used tarpaulins to make bags. Just make your creative juices flow. Attend a seminar on “Zero Waste Management”.
Segregate your trash. |
Recycle batteries into paperweights. Made plant holders out of old fruit juice packs, and used plastic as pillow stuffing, do it as part of “clean and green” project.
Make a compost pit or heap in your backyard, place grass and tree trimmings, weeds and food scraps to make fertilizer and return their nutrient value to the soil. It will also alleviate our garbage problem.
Place a filled half-gallon glass bottle in your toilet tank and you will save 900 gallons of water a year!
To lower fuel consumption while driving and improve mileage—accelerate and slow down gradually.
When buying a new appliance, check the energy efficient ratio. These are the yellow labels attached to the unit. Units with a higher energy efficient factor are more energy efficient and cost less to operate. A gas stove is 2 ½ times more energy efficient than an electric one.
To save energy, arrange food in the refrigerator neatly for good airflow! Clean the refrigerator condenser coils at least twice a year using vacuum or broom. The coils at the back of the unit remove heat.
Use natural light whenever possible. Place reading tables near windows and put skylights in working areas. Switch to compact fluorescent lamps. CFL’s are more expensive, but they use only 25 % of the energy used in incandescent bulbs, and last eight times longer.
Use the proper amount of detergent. Too many suds may require extra rinsing, which makes washing machines use more energy.
Warm leftovers with microwave or oven toasters. They use up to 30% less energy than regular ovens. Use glass pans because it retains heat even when you set the oven at a lower temperature.
Don’t use the TV or the PC on standby mode. Unplug those units that are not in use.
Support anti-smoke belching hotline and anti-smoking campaigns to help ease air pollution.
Join and volunteer for tree planting activities and clean up drives.
Have enough sense to hang on to trash until you find the proper place to put it (not just littering all over the place).
Regularly donate film canisters, eyeglass frames, and soda cans. Some organizations have been collecting them and it’s never too late to help!
Go ahead and write the companies/authorities you think need to know about the important environmental concerns. To all who have done this already—keep up the good work!
Let’s urge companies to have refilling stations for their liquid products.
Support the resolution to stop releasing balloons in the air. Balloons that are let free usually land in our seas and harm our marine animals. Let’s make everyday Earth Day!
We need to have Planet Patrol Officers for every family household. Here are the Planet Patrol Officers we should have:
Water Watcher: At a drop per second, a leaky faucet wastes 2,500 gallons of water per year. On the lookout for faucets not completely closed, or with worn out washers (Paying special attention to faucets in public places like malls, schools, etc.) report to proper authorities any broken pipes or washers to be replaced.
Electricity Power Patrol: Watch out for lights, electrical appliances (air conditioners, electric fans, etc.) Report to proper authorities energy being wasted (for example a lighted street lamp during the day).
Punctuality Police Person: Making sure that you, your family and friends are punctual for meetings and appointments (Take into account traffic time, getting ready, etc.) For example, if the family has an early trip to make in the morning of the following day, advise them to go to bed early the preceding night. We should always remember that time is a valuable resource which cannot be re-used or recycled.
Garbage Guard: Guard against littering. Start with your own home and extend to your school or office. Not only should we refrain from littering, but we should also PICK UP garbage we see. Pay extra attention to (family, friends who throw garbage out of vehicles. Advise them (nicely) that we should keep the garbage ‘til we find a garbage can to throw it in.
Recycle Marshall: See to it that you re-use or recycle all you can. For example: Re-use plastic bags or better yet use your own tote bags for shopping instead of those from the store. Re-use back side of paper, envelopes and plastic containers. Donate old tires to re-build coral reefs. Gather bottles and cans to be recycled.

It may not be a drastic change, but at least, try to make a change in one’s family or community.

I hope you also do your part in helping to save Mother Earth,
