An eye-opener for all Filipinos

The August issue of Esquire Magazine.

My friend said one of the most pretentious people ever are those balikbayans, (Philippine-born newly-minted US citizens trying hard to fake the Stateside accent but hardly succeeding) who visit the country and does nothing but complain all about the heavy traffic, the heat, the taong-grasa (read: beggars) and compare the country’s situation with that of the U.S. I agree with my friend, but I still believe there are a few exceptions, of course.
I just read an article about “Why we love Manila,” it’s sort of an advocacy to bring back Manila to life. But if I had my way, I’d love to make it into “Why I love the Philippines” or “Why I am proud to be a Filipino”. I think that’s more sensible.
In fact, the said article made me reflect and think about my own answers to those two questions. When was the last time we said something good about a fellow Filipino, President Aquino asked in his last SONA. Or say something really positive about our country?
Despite of its many flaws, our country still had something else that other countries do not have. In the Philippines, you have porters to carry your luggage; you can work hard and afford a driver or a nanny to take care of your children. If you’re vain, our spas and salons here offer massage and other hair treatments for a tenth of the price abroad. Not to mention, it’s a whole lot cheaper to study here.
Have you guys read the latest issue of Esquire magazine? Yes, I am talking of their August issue. Sometimes it takes a foreigner to slap the truth on our faces.  Esquire magazine fearless food editor Tom Parker Bowles (son of Camila Parker Bowles, thereby making him a stepson of Prince Charles, heir to the British throne) came to Manila before the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton with only a photographer.

Esquire food editor Tom Parker Bowles

In his article for the British edition of Esquire, Parker Bowles was candid about his friends’ initial reaction when he mentioned his decision that he’s flying to Manila. According to his friends, Manila’s “one of the grimmest cities in the world”.
“No one could understand why I’d fly all the way out to this tropical republic of 7,000 islands and spend my time in the capital! It was like going to Disneyland, only to waste the entire visit in the loos by the main gate. This was a city, I was told, to be endured with a hanky held firmly to one’s mouth, the sort of place that made Sodom and Gomorrah look like Marlow on a crisp autumnal morn. I was told that bodyguards were ‘essential’, that everyone carried guns, and had no compunction using them.
It was such a good thing that Parker Bowles trusted his instincts and concluded in the August issue of Esquire: “So why go to Manila? A city neither famed for its food or beauty, it’s not the most obvious choice for adventures gastronomic or aesthetic. But it was one of the few cities in Southeast Asia I knew next to nothing about. And for me, it’s always had a certain exotic, far-flung charm. The more people tried to put me off going, the more determined I became to tramp its streets.”
On tour in the Filipino capital, Esquire’s gallivanting gourmand encounters fried pigs’ heads, warm duck embryos among others. Parker Bowles even describes the dinner prepared by Margarita Fores as one that turned growing flirtation of Filipino food “into true love.” He was served with a lechon, “a great, shiny roast pig.” The pig seemingly coated in thin toffee, sits gleaming in the centre of the table,” Tom recalled. “It’s one of the best things I’ve ever tried, full stop…I chew, my head in hog heaven.” And after trying Margarita’s sinigang, “stunningly clean, elegant and fresh tasting. And that sourness is just right. Simple, yet glorious.”
He ended his article by recalling wistfully, “As we drive back to the hotel, my belly full, and head stuffed with chat and goodwill, I look around. Yes, it’s a city with pockmarked face and horrible limp, a place of erroneous preconceptions. But it has a heart of gold. Like the kind beauty who’s fallen on hard times. Far more than a mere hub for the rest of the country, an archipelagic afterthought, Manila’s one hell of a capital city. It hums and throbs and buzzes and whirrs. Overlooked and underappreciated, it’s plucky survivor. You just have to look beyond the obvious, scratch away the generalisations and long-held cant. Just like the food. Visit Manila with those in the know. You can’t fail.

If foreigners like Parker Bowles appreciated what our country has to offer to the world, then why can’t we Filipinos? Let’s all ponder on it and maybe jot down a list on why being a Filipino is something we must all be proud of.

Captain America is my Shield Slinger Super Soldier

I admit not fully aware of Captain America or his very existence until my beloved Kyle came into my life. I had never been into Marvel Comics, much so into heroes regardless of their supernatural abilities and powers. But when Kyle came into my life, as a young boy, he was naturally drawn into them that I had to get to know them as well so as to understand what he's getting himself into. It's quite surprising for someone like me who hadn't really picked up any comic book aside from Archie's. However, in the process, I have learned a thing or two about these superheroes I used to only read about. I can't help it, Kyle loves to have it as topic for our discussion.

So, what do I know about Captain America now? Before becoming the villain-smashing, all-American superhero we know him today, Captain America a.k.a. Steve Rogers, was a would-be soldier who tried to enlist himself in the army. But because of his tiny frame and lithe body built, basically a frail body to begin with, poor Steve didn't make the cut! Awww! I'd have to say, that's totally harsh.

And things had changed when he meets General Phillips, who invites him to become a part of Operation: Rebirth. Operation rebirth is a U.S. government special project that creates a line of super soldiers, with super strength, speed, and agility, out of ordinary men. The General and his cohorts take Steve to their top secret underground laboratory, where Dr. Erskine injects him with the Super Serum--a combination of chemicals designed to give an ordinary man (yup, even stick-thin like him) an almost perfect battle-ready physique.

The serum had been successful into transforming Steve into Captain America. He's the world's first-ever super soldier and the U.S. government's most advanced battle weapon!

I personally don't have any particular Captain America favorite moment. But I'd like to share why Captain America is an anatomy of an all-american superhero for us. He's got relatively large-head to pack all that grey matter. Kyle and I both agree that in order to be a hero, one needs an extra brain power to know what to do during emergencies and learn to plan well for plots and disguises during battle strategies!

He's got humungous biceps. I think it's pretty important as the shield's prolly as heavy as a baby t-rex, so his cap needs muscle power to hurt it at foes. He also has hard-as-stone upper torso--when all else fails, Captain America can take down his enemies mano y mano. Plus he's got powerful legs. He's got thighs and calves as strong , there's no running away from him, that's for sure!

And best of all, Captain America's nemesis has got a face only a mother could love--that of Red Skull. He's the only man we know who can't do three stuff: wrinkle his nose (his nose is unique on its own), pout (he's got a different set of teeth or mouth) or blush (because he's already all-red).

Oh, and have I mentioned that Captain America helps us bond together as a family? You see, after getting to know who he is for sometime now, I did not realize that my mother knows him a whole lot better than I do. Captain America first came out in the early 40's and it used to be really popular during my mother's childhood years. Thus, her knowledge of our shield slinger super soldier was understandable. So each time Kyle had a certain question that I could not answer about Captain America, it is my mother who answer it for me. And it's fun, seeing three generations talking lively about a fictional character that turned into a superhero. It's nice to say that Captain America gels the three of us together tangled into a web of conversation (Kyle, Mom and I). I'd say Captain America is an inspiration for many, that nothing is truly impossible to a willing mind. Yes, there can be a hero in each of us, it's just a matter of showing bravery, with a dash of patriotism.

Captain America: The First Avenger will be shown in Philippine theaters starting July 27, 2011

Join The Journalistic View Birthday Giveaway

I'm actually not the type who joins online contests (of course, aside from those I find on social sites like Facebook). I don't know, it's just not me. But for a change, and since I know her personally--she's one of those nicest people you'll ever meet, I am joining Mommy Divine Caraecle's birthday giveaway.

For a while, I thought I had been too late, but I soon figured out her giveaway's like weekly. Wow, that's a great birthday, right? Sharing your blessings on your birthday month had never been this fun. I might do the same thing on my birthday month too. (But that would be like two months from now, I don't wanna get old yet.) She had given me a great idea (thanks!)...

For the third week, Mommy Divine's giving away a solar charger and a $10 cash through PayPal. Anyway, I hope just like me, you can check out her page here and join her giveaway where the grand prize is a Rudy Project wristwatch. Whew! How's that? Again, Happy Birthday Mommy Divine!

Monsters on the Loose at Market! Market!

A typical day at Market Market Central Plaza, except at the time I was there, the fountains were off.
I went to the Market, Market in Global City yesterday to meet up with my older sister who now lives somewhere in Taguig. We were supposed to meet so that I can give her t-shirts I had purchased from Boracay for her and my niece Icy. However, while I was on my way, I got a text from my sister saying that she can no longer make it. Coming from the far off end of Quezon City, it was impossible for me to go back. I figured, I would just try to check out books from Fullybooked (The Philippines’ answer to Barnes and Nobles if you ask my opinion) since it’s only walking distance from Market, Market. And that’s exactly what I did.
I browsed into new arrivals, best sellers and even went past the magazine sections to see what else there is to find. There’s an urge in me to buy a book I so desire, but I still had so many books left unread at home. I promised myself, I would just come back to purchase it soon. For the meantime, I’d satisfy myself by reading other books. In fact, I got so much into one story that I barely noticed it was getting late. The next thing I knew, it was a quarter past six o’ clock.

From Bonifacio High Street, I went towards Market! Market!,  because I wanted to grab a quick snack before heading home. The place was packed as I expected it to be since it’s the 15th of the month (salary day for most people) and a Friday. As I head towards the food kiosk, a lady gave me a flier that had Pain Monsters Spotted on its headline. I browsed through it and it said that any time that day these monsters would be there to invade Market! Market! Central Plaza.
Suddenly, mascots that looked like colorful monsters appeared. I figured this must be something interesting, how I wished Kyle’s with me so he himself could witness this. Thinking of him, I immediately grabbed my digital camera with an intention to take photos. But then they were moving from time to time that I had to take a video instead. I admit it was my first time to use a digital camera for taking videos.
I didn’t even know what button to press to begin with. I just had to find out on my own because I had been stubborn not to read its manual since the day it was bought. Forgive me if the video wasn’t that clear—I am such a neophyte.
I had been used to taking videos using a camcorder, but never with a digicam. However, for impromptu videos such as this, maybe this will suffice. Since I just came from a trip to Boracay with my entire family, I had not had the chance to erase photos, hence, memory full soon flashed my poor digicam.

The Invasion of Pain Monsters
There was a huge crowd in circle at the Market! Market! Central Plaza. There were colorful monsters mascots called Legion of Pain that paraded one at a time: the lady monster in red whose name was dysmenorrhea had a whip, another guy monster with a mallet that represents headache, the green one whom I guess was toothache (he resembled the tooth) with a club and another with lightning-shaped metal represented body pain. These scary looking monsters quickly caught the crowd's attention. These monsters were ready to strike and cause harm and widespread destruction to the people around. Then came another mascot, in the shape of an orange tablet saying that he’s ready to take on these creatures and rescue the people. However, his powers were not enough to defend these four threatening mascots. Good thing, the Advil Liqui-gel Team came to the rescue! These three amazing youngsters came in stylish entrance while riding a motorcycle (just as the way most action stars do). They fought the four pain monsters with their lazer swords and guns. The Advil Liqui-gel team defeated the pain monsters with in no time! The pain monsters darted away for they know they are no match to the Advil Liqui-gel Team
I'd have to say that this was a good promotional campaign. The colorful yet scary monsters caught the public's attention and more. Most of the crowd stayed on as these mascots had some sort of a public performance promoting Advil Liqui-gel. It was then easier to giveaway samples later on as the audience knew exactly what the product was all about.

The newly formulated Advil now comes in a green softgel capsule. It’s got a liquid formula that is effective for fast and safest relief from pain. Say buh-bye to headache, toothache, fever, muscle ache, backche, and even menstrual cramp the fast way.

The Advil Liqui-gel capsule sample I received promo the promo lady.

Take the Advil Liqui-gel capsule every 4 to 6 hours while symptoms persist. It's analgesic (acting to relieve pain), antipyretic (which means it is used to prevent and reduce fever), non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory. Advil is safe and effective and is recommended and prescribed by doctors worldwide.

We all live in a fast-paced world where everything also comes in an instant. Instant noodles, vendo machine, microwave, ATM banks, instant messaging via online among so many others. That’s why I believe it is also important for us to have an instant relief against pain.

I never realized I would needing a pain reliever. I used to be the type who abhorred taking medicines. I used to think for as long as I can bear the pain, I will do it just so I won't resort to taking the pill. But ever since I had experienced excruciating pain from my impacted wisdom tooth a few years after my "beloved" braces were off, I started to become "best friends" with pain relievers such as Advil. The pain kills me like crazy. For someone who's taken cared of her teeth and practices good oral hygiene since I was a kid (I avoided sweets), I never thought I would be needing pain relievers. So now, I always have an Advil on my bag each time I go out. For I never know when my toothache comes. And I'm glad it now comes in a softgel capsule, making it easier to swallow unlike the old huge tablet form. Indeed, saying buh-bye to pain had never been this easy.

Be safe,

D' Perfume Closet: Get a whiff of high quality perfumes!

Some people make their presence known by the perfume they wear. In fact, I once read that even Science would agree that our olfactory nerves are the lasting of all our senses. You may easily forget what you had read, seen, tasted, or heard--but not the one you had smelled. I am not quite so sure about that, it could be just a myth or it could also be a fact. But nevertheless, I think we should all smell good. And I am not just talking about taking a bath or keeping a good hygiene here. I am saying that we also make a statement by using  light colognes or perfumes.

I am pretty sure you guys are familiar with the different brand or labels of expensive perfumes. One professor I know had a huge collection of perfumes that each time her student passes by, she'd know exactly what particular perfume she had used. There goes the question: Does a perfume brand need to be expensive in order to be effective?

I'd say not, for there are perfumes that smells good and are indeed long-lasting than those expensive high-end brands. One example would be D' Perfume Closet's line of FM fragrance. FM Group perfume products are of the highest quality and are made in Europe with scent essences supplied by DROM Fragrances, one of the ten leading manufacturers of perfumes in the world.

FM Group provides perfume products which have equal or better quality than the known brands. All products are sold via Independent Distributors, cutting out all cost of commercials, TV or Magazine advertising and retail overheads which makes it 70% cheaper than you will pay in any shop. In Addition

FM Group uses the highest concentration with strength rating from 16-20% essence (compared to the Eau de toilette available in the market which is only 15%).
The higher the concentration, the longer it lasts.

FM PERFUME IS REAL!
FM products are in no-way replicas of or imitations of any other company's product and stand alone in their own right and on their own merits. Brand names are for reference purposes only.

For further inquiries regarding the product or you're interested to be a distributor, please send an email to Drixx Martinez at dperfumecloset@yahoo.com.ph

Fashion Blendz: Where One Finds Great Buys at Bargain Price!

Believe it or not, but she started out her business out of her desire to stop impulsive buying. "I figured I had to learn how to put this shopaholic attitude into something good. So I decided to start a small business for the sake of satisfying my cravings for shopping," says Ms. Joanne Tuanquin, owner and creator of online shop, Fashion Blendz.  She started with a really small capital in 2009. Back then, she  was selling cool t-shirts and it became some sort of a "trial" period for her. But soon, she had to add in more items like accessories, shoes and other fashionable stuff.  "The accessories I used to sell were from my own creations, making accessories was a hobby. But since I had a regular job, I could no longer handle such as I didn't have enough time," explains Joanne.

Ms. Joanne Tuanquin,  owner and creator of online fashion shop Fashion Blendz.
Joanne began to sell not just unique shirts, but other casual items like fashionable shorts, tank tops, casual tops, dresses, office blouses, leggings, and on some occasions (if time permits her to do so), she still sells her handmade bead accessories. Joanne sells both retail and wholesale. For bulk purchases, she offers free shipping nationwide. And most importantly, her clothes are trendy, comfy and unbelievably affordable.
Ms. Tuanquin is an avid shopper. Here she trots around Singapore to find great stuff to sell.
Fashion Blendz clothing is also reliable when it comes to sizing. When you order a size, Joanne makes sure it will perfectly fit you so that there'll be no hassle, and no reason for returning them. You'd be really impressed with the high quality and you'll be grateful you've ordered them for these clothes are the types and trends that lasts for years.  You'd never grow tired wearing them because Fashion Blendz clothes are so comfy to wear.

"Don't be afraid to mix and match, experiment and feel good about yourself. Sometimes attaching a big rose to your belt can make a huge difference. Be creative with your clothes. Get ideas from the ones who's been doing it a long time.  Wear clothes that flatter you," Joanne advises.

Goodbye Harry Potter! I'm going to miss you!

The last of Harry Potter Books
I’ve both anticipated and at the same time dreaded this moment. It’s bitterweet, yet I know I had to say goodbye to Harry Potter. The first time I had encountered HP, I was at the Philippine International Book Fair in the Megatrade Hall of SM Megamall. I had heard stories and reactions about that book even before I had managed to buy myself a copy. To be honest, I purchased a copy to find out for myself why some people were against it. They said it wasn’t for kids and that it taught bad wiccan magic spells etc. And for me, the best thing to fin that out is to buy the book and read it on my own. In fact, I used to think students were “crazy” for carrying bulky HP hardbound books everywhere they go. It looked heavier than carrying all their textbooks in school.  I never even thought I’d be like them too.

I’ve always been a bookworm, but I’m not a fan of the HP kind—adventure stuff. I used to go for something more “girly” like Sweet Dreams and Sweet Valley and perhaps Goosebumps. To put it simply, I had to admit that I bought The Sorcerer’s Stone to lived up to the hype.  But in no time, I couldn’t put it down. I was hooked! The next time I went out, I bought Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban (which I loved dearly).

For Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, and Half-Blood Prince, I ordered my copies waaay in advance, as any self-respecting Potterheads should.  On days they were released, I would fall in line early to grab my copy first and then lock myself into my room for hours, reading each chapter from prologue to epilogue! As if that wasn’t enough, I even bought a few HP items to as memorabilia, I have HP Sorting hat bag, HP wand and had a friend sent Butterbeers for me.

Now Deathly Hallows was a big deal. Yes, I both anticipated and dreaded reading it in equal measure, because it was going to be the last book. Unlike the previous books, I did not bother to buy it right away even if I really wanted to. I’ve asked friends for spoilers alert and stuff, but I waited for over a year before purchasing my own copy.

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

The ending was bittersweet. I wanted more. Thankfully there were still movies to look forward to. I love the movies but I love my books more. Now the movies are coming to an end. I’ve been with Harry since the beginning. I got excited for him after the Sorting Hat shouted Gryffindor, cheered him on his first Quidditch match, cried for Dumbledore and Sirius Black, loved seeing Lily and James Potter on the Mirror of Erised, and secretly wished that Hermione and Harry would end up together (*sniff, sniff). I was with him all the way. And even though I know I could always revisit the books and the DVDs, I know I will still miss Harry. Would you guys believe me if I'd tell you I also cried for Severus Snape? Yes, I did. I've always hated his character from the start and I never understood Dumbledore for trusting him, it was only on the Deathly Hallows that I understood why.
J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter Series.

And I will always love J.K. Rowling’s magical world—the characters, the themes, unique words, bizarre sweets. But there are two things I love the most about Harry Potter: the book inspired most youngsters to read books even as thick as 700++ pages! Kids don’t usually like carrying heavy books around, but HP book changed all that.  And yes, that’s what I call real magic! Thank you J.K. Rowling...

Jollitown Season 4: Now on Abs-cbn!

I had been lucky to be invited to an event recently. It was one of those very rare occasions where I am allowed to bring a kid with me, and not only that, it was really an event for kids. It was a media launch of Jollitown Season 4, giving us a preview of their new exciting season. Kyle had been a huge fan of Jollibee since he was about three, so when I told him about it, he was ecstatic.  He started preparing the clothes that he would be wearing and he simply couldn’t stop talking about it. In fact, his eagerness towards attending the said event made us arrived really early at Whitespace in Makati that Saturday morning.

Kyle and I, with fellow blogger Bedalyn Aguas behind.
Upon entering the venue hall, one is transported right into Jollitown. There’s the Jollicademy, fire engines, the flower store, friendly tree, the magical clock tower DingdangDong and the city hall. Kids and parents got the chance to meet and greet the cute beloved characters of their favorite show.  Kyle even insisted that I participate in a game (which I did only because he persuaded me) with him. He was delighted too when his name was called by Jollibee himself.  “It made me feel extra special in some way,” says Kyle. We lost in the game all right, but it was fun plus we went home with consolation prizes anyway.

The Jollitown's City Hall looks lovely.

Kyle ate a lot of his favorite Jollibee chickenjoy, cone twirl vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate krispies and peach mango pies.  The adults were treated to a catering by Albergus, although some parents just couldn’t resist the yummy Jollibee products so they hopped onto the kids’ food station to get some.
Guests also had a fantastic time with the unique games where they got first-hand of what it’s like to be in Jollitown.  Kyle enjoyed the interactive art performance by My Masterpiece Movement, they drew and colored Jollitown to life with awesome masterpieces and took participants in a time-travel journey.

“Jollitown’s goal had always been to entertain and impart values to children. To further strengthen this endeavor, we made a new season even more zestful and fun to effectively reach out to the show’s young audience,” says Twinkle Aniceto, Jollibee brand manager.

Of course, just like any special Jollibee event, the day ended without the entertaining performance from the talented crew of Jollibee, Popo, Hetty, Twirlie and Yum.  Kids gamely danced with them and had their photos taken with them as well.

See the smile painted on each kid? Only Jollibee does that.

Kids will truly be looking forward for an adventure-filled season as they catch their much loved characters onscreen travel across time to help a friend. With new characters, amazing musical numbers, enchanted travels and fun learning’s, their Sundays will no longer be the same again.  Jollitown Season 4 is here and it’s definitely a kiddie must-see.

Starting July 17, Jollitown fans can catch their favorite Jolly characters at a new home and time slot. Join Jollibee and friends in Jollitown Season 4 as it airs on ABS-CBN every Sunday at 9:00AM.

The Purple Fairy thanks Ms. Ruth Floresca, Ms. Chele Mendoza, Ms. Amyline Ching and Mr. Jeman Villanueva.

Always be jolly!
