Tutuban Center: The Wedding Anthology

Wonderfully made wedding gowns for every special lady on her wedding day.

Let's imagine a perfect dream wedding: Church doors open, all eyes are on the bride as she walks towards the altar.  Everyone awaits for the much anticipated moment where the bride will walk down the aisle to Mendelssohn’s tune or perhaps Canon in D by Pachalbel. The groom’s heart pounds faster and faster, getting more nervous with every beat as the bride inches her way to the altar, but the promise of love takes all anxiety away to where forever starts.

Weddings are indeed one of the most challenging events to prepare for a couple as it involves not only themselves but also their families and friends who are witnesses to their union.  Even the simplest wedding ceremony takes months and some more than a year to prepare everything, from minute things like invitations, giveaways, flowers, arrhae, veil, cord, specially the rings, to the bigger ones like the guest list, the church, reception venue and food, and of course the gowns and suits.
A tube dress perfectly goes well with the sexiness in you.

The month of June, often called “The Marrying Month,” is here again. It’s the month where you see couples who will exchange marital vows take on everything that needs to be prepared before they engage in marital bliss. Aside from emotional preparedness, the couple should also be ready for their look.

If you're looking for impressive wedding outfits at a very affordable price, Tutuban Center is the best place to be--the shopping haven for bargain hunters located at the heart of Manila, recently held “The Wedding Anthology: Formal, Wedding and Evening Wear,” a fashion show that featured Tutuban’s tenants specializing in formal wear for both men and women.

The show kicked off with an array of suits for men for any formal occasion, followed by the ladies’ sophisticatedly designed evening dresses that left most of the audience in awe. The next set featured the most anticipated wedding attires, with men in dashing form wearing classic barong, while the women looked extremely elegant in their gowns studded with elaborate decorations.

For dashing grooms, barong made in pina and jusi are also available.

The show was of tremendous benefit for those scouting for the next glossy and trendy look when it comes to formal wear—wedding or not—and the array of remarkable clothes presented during the show made couple’s eyes’ a-glitter with excitement, their hearts a-fluttering as they visualize how they would both look like the moment they are in church in front of the eyes of their families, relatives and friends.

Tutuban brings out the dapper in men.

Weddings have always been one of the most anticipated and extraordinary events in anyone’s life, a great moment of celebration for the couple and their loved one.. But more than all the preparations to make a wedding day beautiful and memorable, more than how the wedding should look, what really matters is how the couple would handle the following days of their married life—together, and more importantly, a promise of forever.

Tutuban Center is located along historic C.M. Recto Avenue right at the heart of Manila’s shopping district.

MASTERCHEF PINOY EDITION SCREENING AUDITION

Everything started with one text message.  A friend sent me an SMS asking if I’d like to try and audition for Masterchef Pinoy Edition. Knowing my own capacity, I decline the invitation right away and encouraged her to try out instead. Being a huge fan of my friend, Abby Baino’s mouthwatering and to-die-for dishes, I knew she had a bigger chance to pass the said screening. In the end, I’ve offered to support her in her goal and promised to accompany her to the actual audition.

The thousands who audition for the Masterchef Pinoy Edition at Oceana.

The minute we arrived at Oceana, we were surprised to see more than 1,000 people waiting for their turn to be interviewed. Abby was 1,834th applicant! How could that be, the audition was supposed to start from 8AM until 3PM? And when we arrived, it’s only around 9AM—that only meant that as early as say 5AM, there were people lining up already! I wonder what will happen to those applicants whose food spoils while they were waiting for their turn? What about those participants who came all the way from Baguio, Batangas, and Pampanga? What if they finish so late in the evening, how are they going to return home? But just as expected, everyone waited for their turn and chance at the said audition.

Some lucky applicants were even asked on camera why they wanted to join the contest.

There were people from all walks of life—simple ones, those that looked like they came out of society pages, “character” ones, and those that were just there for the buzz (well, that includes me, right?)
Applicants all holding out their specialty dish as they await in line.

So what were the qualifications of the Masterchef Pinoy Edition:
You must be 18-50 years old
No culinary degree or diploma
No cooking experience in a restaurant (casual and fine dining)
No teaching experience in a cooking class or demo
And bring your specialty dish (any dish will do!)

When Abby saw how many people were there, there was a little voice inside her who wanted to back out. But I told her, since we’re already at the venue, we might as well persevere and try her luck. It’s a whole lot better to have tried than think about later what could’ve been. And we both persevered. We waited from 9AM until past 5PM for Abby’s turn to face the chef judges. We had skipped our lunch and almost dehydrated ourselves to death. We kept our fingers crossed and hoped for the best.

Ms. Dulce Agrabioso holds her dish with another applicant and my friend Abby ( far right) holding her pasta.

Abby proudly holding her specialty and own recipe Italian-inspired pasta dish.
Sophia Loren de Al Torno pasta--Abby Baino's gets the judges' nod with this delish  recipe.

My friend Abby brought along with her an Italian-inspired specialty dish called Sophia Loren de Al Torno pasta. It is a fusilli pasta dish infused with the refreshing zest of lemon, chunky tuna with Italian parsley, thyme, garlic and drizzled with olive oil. Abby named it before her favorite Italian actress named Sophia Loren. It looks pretty simple yet when you taste the said dish, it’s really refreshing but never overpowering. It had the perfect balance of flavor, texture and taste. It actually cleanses the palate. And I am not saying this just because Abby is my BFF. I am praising her recipe and specialty dish because it really was delicious and quoting what the judge chef said, “This dish is very refreshing!”

Abby answers the questionnaire carefully.
Later, when we heard her number called, I had given her thumbs up sign. Tears had started to well up into my eyes, I’m so happy for my friend. But I had to hold my tears back because I do not want the crowd to see how softie I really am inside.
Other applicants making finishing touches in their plating before presenting them to the judges.

Soon, Abby and the rest of those who passed the first screening had to answer several sheets of paper with different questions. Then, they proceeded to a one-on-one interview with someone from Mastercher Pinoy Edition. It’s really a long, tiring process. The next thing I knew, it was already dark and we were able to finish around 9PM.

Next screening process: one-on-one interview.

Past 5PM. It's almost dark, yet Abby's line hasn't moved until 9AM.

Yes, my friend Abby was able to pass the said grueling screening and audition with flying colors. We did not expect that although we do hoped and prayed for God’s will. But that’s not the end of her journey though, but it’s only the beginning. For in the next few weeks or months, she will again undergo other screening, and hopefully, she could make it until the last where she had to allot 6 to 15 weeks of taping for the Masterchef Pinoy Edition on ABS-CBN to be hosted by Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo.

To my good friend, Abby, here’s hoping you could make it to the top finalists. I’m with you all the way, dear. Good luck and my prayers are with you! Keep it up and congratulations! I am so happy and proud of you! J

HOW ENERGIZER AND NUFFNANG POWER MY LIFESTYLE?

Energizer and Nuffnang power my life through their interminable support in helping me make my work more productive and efficient as well as make my life more meaningful. An Energizer battery is something I could easily depend on when it comes to having the longest battery life. It’s really very important for someone like me because as a freelance writer and blogger, I would often cover media events, press conferences as well as other special activities, both personal and work-related. There’s nothing like capturing each moment to help me write my articles a whole lot better with the use of a handy digital camera, but such stuff would be of no use if there is no battery you can trust on. And I’m happy and completely satisfied with Energizer because it had never fail me. True to its popular TV ad some years back, it really is like an Energizer Bunny, it gets going and going and going…Energizer batteries are the makers of the world’s longest lasting batteries! And I’d say I could very well attest to that claim.

The famous Energizer Bunny from the Ad.

I’ve always been a loyal Energizer battery user. As a young child, I could vividly recall using the same brand so I could play with my walking doll or use my mini walkie-talkie phone with my cousin or sing in my Barbie play microphone. Energizer has played a big part of my childhood years. I know had it not been for those Energizer batteries, my life would’ve been dull and boring as a kid. I grew up as an only child and it’s hard growing up without another sibling to play with. And the toys that I’ve mentioned earlier were the only ones that made my childhood life happier and bearable. Back then, Energizer batteries made sure I did enjoy my childhood by providing me with the longest lasting batteries that seemed to make my toys come to life. Such wonderful memories brought me happiness even up to this day.

My Digital Camera + Energizer batteries = A blogger's best friend

Now that I am an adult, aside from giving me the battery life I need in my digital camera, I also use the same batteries in almost every corner of my nook. I have them on my wall clock, alarm clock, in my fave kitchen gadget—my pepper mill, kitchen time-clock buzzer, on my portable radio, oh my, the list could go on and on…I will never outgrow my love on using Energizer. It continues to keep me going and going and going…

I could say the same thing about Nuffnang. I so love my Nuffnang family. Just like Energizer batteries, Nuffnang helps me keep my emotional sanity. When one works online almost 24/7, there is a tendency that you sometimes forget you have a life aside from the virtual world. And Nuffnang, the advertising blog community family I belong with, makes sure that blogging is not the end all and be all of your identity. Nuffnang provide bloggers like me with fabulous activities and contests, they try to keep the community active.
Nuffnang also updates me with my other passion—watching movie flicks. They hold special movie screenings every now and then. This June 29, they will be having the highly anticipated movie The Amazing Spider-man with new Peter Parker, Andrew Garfield in the lead. I hope to be part of the lucky fifty Nuffies or Nuffnangers who will be able to see the film for FREE at the Powerplant Cinema.  As a self-confessed movie fan, this is one event I don’t want to miss. So I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that I could make it to the list of invited bloggers.
I will forever be grateful to Nuffnang for I owe them my blogger friends whom I had been privileged to interact with in person because of the different events they organize yearly.  If it hadn’t been for Nuffnang, I could’ve been one of those who seemed to have gone and climbed up Mount “Tralala” or live a hermit’s life somewhere in Timbuktu and lived in total isolation because of too much blogging and social media that I tend to forget the essence of real friends. I was able to gain real friends through Nuffnang activities and events. And having friends gives me a sense of fulfillment within. And just as Energizer powers my toys, tools and gadgets, Nuffnang fuels my social life—both empowers me to take full control and enjoy my life.J

My Visit to the 11th Philippine Toys Collectibles Convention 2012

The family that cosplays together stays together.

It was sort of a baptism of fire for me. I had never been to any toy convention nor have I ever been in the Philippine ToyCon ever—although I had been fully aware of its existence the past few years, but I never had the chance to visit or drop by, until now—on their 11th year.  I’d have to thank fellow blogger Azrael Colladilla (who happens to be one of the pillars of the Philippine ToyCon) for such because he invited me on the ToyCon press conference, which further nudged my desire to attend the ToyCon 2012.

An alien graved the Philippine ToyCon2012.

Bruce Lee's still looks so much alive in this statue.

With Kyle as my sidekick, we braved through the hellish traffic in Ortigas just to get to SM Megamall that Saturday afternoon. There was a clash between a bus and a cab on the right side of the road going to crossing. So it had taken quite a while before we were able to make it in SM Megamall. On the 5th level of the said mall, we were both surprised to see the long queue of people for the ToyCon 2012. Some came with their entire family as cosplayers, some with colorful and huge props, others came in typical casual clothes. It was a good thing we had tickets already, so there’s no need for us to line up.

This Cosplayer duo gamely posed for the camera.

Some Cosplayers were given the chance to see themselves on TV.
Kyle enjoyed the car racing that was part of the exhibit. He even had a hand in one of those cars. It looked like a miniature real car because its got its own lights and it does have such amazing speed, just like in the film Fast Five.

A sexy female cosplayer with sword.

There were simultaneous events going on in the three halls of SM Megamall’s Megatrade.  There were online gaming, toy merchandised being sold—wide range of toys were made available. I even saw the toys I grew up with. G.I Joe, powerful siblings She-ra and He-Man figures, Rainbow Brite, Little Twin Stars, OMG, the list could go on and on! I seemed like a kid lost in a huge toy store, with so many items to choose from, I didn’t know what to buy! It felt like I went back to my childhood days when I wanted to purchase these figures for myself. There were so many figures, dolls, different movie and anime merchandise—there even was one selling glow-in-the-dark earrings and personalized blings such as dog tags with engraved names on them. Comic fans could even find their long lost items in order to complete their collections. And there were also DVDs—for different cartoons' fans needs.

Kyle Madrid with a cosplayer.

One of the figure collections of Ironman that were on display.

Another cosplayer poses before my camera.

Kyle had so much fun with photo opportunities from cosplayers. There were even freebies such as Zesto drinks and Royal True Orange-in cans. Plus photo booths, not to mention on-stage games and all sorts of entertainment. We both felt like we were in dreamland or some fantasyland where we see everyone eager to showcase their costumes and share their treasured collections. Kyle said, “I didn’t have any idea how hard it is to wear such costumes until I saw someone removed his, he was perspiring as if he’d just come from a run.”

Kyle truly enjoyed the free car race game.
If you guys missed this chance to join in on the fun, sorry but you have to wait until next year’s 12th ToyCon to be able to do so. And next year, Kyle and I both promised to save money to buy our desired toy—we’ve only purchased shirts this year. This will be something to look forward to, year after year…J

JOIN RICKY LEE’S FREE INTENSIVE SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOP FOR TV AND FILM

The entire 1st Abs-Cbn Comedy Scriptwriting Workshop Class (2005) with Director Jose Javier "Joey" Reyes

Around seven years ago, I remember falling in line as I apply for the Ricky Lee’s Intensive Scriptwriting Workshop for ABS-CBN and Star Cinema.  There was really a long queue near the ABS-CBN audience entrance. If I am not mistaken, my number was 8000++.  The crowd was composed of people from all walks of life—fresh grads, oldies, yuppies, and I tell you, even “characters” that seem to have come to life from the silver screen. We were all aiming to get to the top, to make it in the list of the lucky ones whom respected and multi-awarded TV and movie scriptwriter Mr. Ricky Lee would be training in his intensive workshop for FREE. It’s some sort of a scholarship that will open doors for those who wanted to work behind the camera as scriptwriters.

The author, Alma Rivera and Abs-Cbn production manager Cynthia Jordan.

Director Ipe Pelino with Abs-Cbn executive Joanna Gomez Santos, the author and Alma Rivera.

During my time, I was interviewed by the late Gilbert “Manong” Perez (May he rest in peace+), an award-winning ABS-CBN director who megged most of the hit teleserye in the late ‘90s.  Too bad that he passed away due to heart attack while he was filming a project. It was a panel interview and you had to really impress whoever was assigned to interview you, or else you’d easily get lost from the race. I had tried my best to be as smart as I could be. Not really, to get a good impression, it’s more of an advantage on my part, being naturally talkative but I made sure I did not sound annoying.
There were series of interviews followed by sample works in different genre that soon followed. The group had been cut down each time so as to make it to the final list who will undergo the workshop. Then, we received calls for brainstorming group, where we could pitch our ideas with executive producers and production managers etc. Soon, we were called again to undergo a scriptwriting workshop—but alas! We were surprised to know that we were chosen to be part of the Comedy Scriptwriting Workshop and not Ricky Lee’s Intensive Scriptwriting workshop in which we officially applied for. I didn’t know if they found me funny or that they seemed to have laughed at my work that they had picked me for comedy. Nevertheless, I am forever grateful for such—that I had the chance to work with and know another award-winning scriptwriter for movies, Jose Javier Reyes or Direk Joey Reyes and comedy television director Philip “Ipe” Pelino who used to do Dolphy’s shows on ABS. I had learned so much from those almost three months of intensive workshop. I was able to gain friends, some I still keep up to this day.  We were like one big happy family, some of my batchmates still work for ABS-CBN—writers from Walang Hanggan, PBB etc.

Direk Joey Reyes with the workshop participants. The author in front with fellow workshopper.

Proud grads of 1st Abs-Cbn Comedy Scriptwriting class in 2005.

AYOSDITO.PH iBALL EVENT

I know not much of online selling and buying until a friend introduced me to it a few years back. AyosDito.ph is one of the preferred online classified ads for Filipinos and by Filipinos. It’s recently been awarded as the No.1 Classified Ads website by Digital Filipino Search Profile Index. And they had organized its first Ayos Dito iBall, a blogger event wherein I’ve been lucky to be invited.

The said event transpired in Cowo Asia, the first of its kind workspace and virtual office in the country that allows individuals to co-work (hence, the name) with other entrepreneurs, freelancers, designers and professionals in a creative environment. COWO is the venue where business owners and freelancers can work, have access to the methods of communication and Internet for an affordable annual membership fee.

Sebastian's signature uniquely flavored ice cream--in champorado and sapin-sapin + taho!

Bloggers had a lot of fun with the unique food that was prepared such as Tempura Quail eggs, Sisig Tacos, Tuyo pasta, Corned beef pandesal, not to mention Sebastian’s ice cream which was truly a hit among bloggers that night with flavors like Mangga’t Suman, Sapin-Sapin and Champorado ice creams!

The author shows the buco lychee martini glass she tried to take a few sips in.
There was also unlimited free booze that night—from colorful candy flavored to fruity concoctions and Martinis to whatnot.  Name it and they probably had it! I tried one called Buco Lychee Martini, which my blogger friend Ate Milette Sison of http://www.luckyfinds-shareapic.blogspotcom recommended. However, since I am not really a drinker myself, I just took a few sips, although I had to admit, the booze tasted good.
Blogger and friend Milette Sison won a bouquet of red flowers and SM gift certificates in a game.

It was indeed a fun filled evening to remember with games, entertainment and raffle prizes including a Fuji Polaroid camera, Samsung Galaxy Y and Apple I-Pad 3!

Solenn Heausaff gamely eats the dare given by the host.

As if those wonderful stuff wasn’t enough, the gorgeous Ms. Solenn Heusaff, upcoming actor John Medina and funny DJ from Magic 89.9 DJ Tony Toni also graced the said event.

It's so hard to get near this goddess, with so many blogger men going on after her.

This photo is the closest I could get to Solenn.

AyosDito.Ph is developed for Pinoys by Pinoys from 701 Search Inc. It is a join venture between Singapore Press Holdings Limited and Schibsted ASA. Singapore Press Holdings is Southeast Asia’s leading media organization with a roster of 17 newspaper titles in four languages; over 100 magazine titles and numerous websites.

Purple Plum Fairy thanks AyosDito.ph and Mr. Edwin Padillo of Fleishman Hillard International Communication for the invites.
