The entire 1st Abs-Cbn Comedy Scriptwriting Workshop Class (2005) with Director Jose Javier "Joey" Reyes |
Around
seven years ago, I remember falling in line as I apply for the Ricky Lee’s
Intensive Scriptwriting Workshop for ABS-CBN and Star Cinema. There was really a long queue near the
ABS-CBN audience entrance. If I am not mistaken, my number was 8000++. The crowd was composed of people from
all walks of life—fresh grads, oldies, yuppies, and I tell you, even
“characters” that seem to have come to life from the silver screen. We were all
aiming to get to the top, to make it in the list of the lucky ones whom
respected and multi-awarded TV and movie scriptwriter Mr. Ricky Lee would be
training in his intensive workshop for FREE. It’s some sort of a scholarship
that will open doors for those who wanted to work behind the camera as
scriptwriters.

Director Ipe Pelino with Abs-Cbn executive Joanna Gomez Santos, the author and Alma Rivera. |
During
my time, I was interviewed by the late Gilbert “Manong” Perez (May he rest in peace+), an
award-winning ABS-CBN director who megged most of the hit teleserye in the late
‘90s. Too bad that he passed away
due to heart attack while he was filming a project. It was a panel interview
and you had to really impress whoever was assigned to interview you, or else
you’d easily get lost from the race. I had tried my best to be as smart as I
could be. Not really, to get a good impression, it’s more of an advantage on my
part, being naturally talkative but I made sure I did not sound annoying.
There
were series of interviews followed by sample works in different genre that soon
followed. The group had been cut down each time so as to make it to the final
list who will undergo the workshop. Then, we received calls for brainstorming
group, where we could pitch our ideas with executive producers and production
managers etc. Soon, we were called again to undergo a scriptwriting
workshop—but alas! We were surprised to know that we were chosen to be part of
the Comedy Scriptwriting Workshop and not Ricky Lee’s Intensive Scriptwriting
workshop in which we officially applied for. I didn’t know if they found me
funny or that they seemed to have laughed at my work that they had picked me
for comedy. Nevertheless, I am forever grateful for such—that I had the chance
to work with and know another award-winning scriptwriter for movies, Jose
Javier Reyes or Direk Joey Reyes and comedy television director Philip “Ipe”
Pelino who used to do Dolphy’s shows on ABS. I had learned so much from those
almost three months of intensive workshop. I was able to gain friends, some I
still keep up to this day. We were
like one big happy family, some of my batchmates still work for ABS-CBN—writers
from Walang Hanggan, PBB etc.

not working po yung link. :/
ReplyDeleteThank you Arvin for visiting my blog and for telling me that the link does not work. I'll try to figure it out. :)
DeleteWorking na po yung link. Ok na, I hope you guys can join. Once done with the said workshop, Abs may not guarantee work for all participants, but you can do part-time jobs for them which can somehow help you financially. :)
Deletethank you. :)
DeleteHi, there Anonymous! Ang alam ko po, kahit high school graduate lang, pwede pa rin naman po sumali, as long as they see in you a big potential and the talent they need--you have lots of creative juices flowing in you, the works. Kasi some of my former batchmates sa workshop, HS grad din, or college undergrad, pero they got in. I strongly suggest to try it pa rin, wala naman masama, diba? Who knows, you might be accepted.
Deletesir ano po yung sched ng workshop?! ok lng po kya sa may work 'to?! interested po kasi ako, . .thanks!
ReplyDeleteHello! First of all po, hindi po ako "sir", girl po ako. Pero ok lang naman, parati naman po akong napagkakamalang guy because of my nickname. :)
DeleteWith regards to the workshop schedule po, hindi po ako sure when will the actual workshop will be, kasi I'm no longer connected with ABS-CBN po. They will only disclose the schedule to those who passed the screening. Yes, this is open even to those with work po. Kasi I used to have batchmates na may regular jobs naman. I had a classmate na Ateneo professor, call center agent, regular college student, and madami pang iba. It all boils down to time management po. Good luck po!
Hello Is it in the weekends po ba or in the evening?
DeleteHi etc! Sorry for the late reply. I'm not quite sure if it's going to be held in the evening or on weekends. But what we had before was after lunch. But I think you should ask the ABS HR to know more. I am sorry I am not anymore connected with them. i just felt sharing this free scriptwriting workshop with my blog readers. Thanks!
Minsan iniisip ko if magiging worth it talaga for me.Thanks po for posting this. It's very informative.
ReplyDeleteHello! Sorry I think I made you confused, I'm not Alma. That's my friend and batchmate sa scriptwriting workshop before. I'm Vance po. Pero ok lang naman. :)
DeleteYes, there's a big possibility for you to be absorbed by ABS-CBN, although they do not guarantee that all workshop graduates will get hired ha. It all depends on how you work during the entire process (from the screening down to the actual workshop). If they see a potential in you, they will surely hire you po. But don't worry, I talked to the HR of ABS, they said that as much as possible, they would want to hire graduates of this workshop naman, depending on job opening and vacancies din kasi.
You don't have to give up your regular job naman po siguro. I would say, you should try and apply for this. And if by chance you get passed the screening, it doesn't mean to say, you have to give up your own job. Baka po kayanin naman ng schedule ninyo. Mabait naman po si Sir Ricky Lee, perhaps you could make arrangement with him po. And for as long as you could submit requirements and stuff needed, I'm sure you'll make it.
I wish you all good luck! :)
ReplyDeleteHello Anonymous! Usually, prerogative mo na po yan. If you're more comfortable in either Filipino or English, yun ang gamitin mong medium. But once you've passed the screenings, usually, Filipino po ang ipinasusulat nila eh. Kung saan po kayo magaling, dun naman kayo nila ilalagay, once they see the potential in you. I had a batchmate, sa News & Current affairs inilagay after graduation because he's good in factual stories than fictional. Good luck pong muli!
DeleteHi Vance! Ano ang mga free once makapasok ka? May free accomodation, board and lodging po ba?
ReplyDeleteHello Anonymous! You were asking about freebies once you get passed the screenings right? Well, I could only speak for my own experience because like I've previously said, I am no longer in any way connected with ABS-CBN. So for that matter, I could only based my answer on what has happened to us before.
DeleteThere was free food during the entire workshop--we were given out food coupons which we could purchase at the ABS cafeteria or they would have buffet meals for all workshop participants. We also had badges as temporary I.D.s,
But for a free board & lodging, medyo mataas po ata ang expectations ninyo sa workshop na ito. Expensive napo ang nasabing workshop if you're going to pay for it, given the fact na dekalibre ang mga hahawak nito. Our workshop we had was good for around 3 months straight, meeting once or twice a week. If you get in, it's up to you if you'll board or rent a room here in Manila at your own expense.
I guess you probably did not read my entire blog post for you to be asking about the screening. I had given my two cents worth how the entire screening process would be like. Of course, may personal interview. if they liked your sample scripts, you will be asked to make a personal appearance at the ABS office. And a series of screenings thereafter because they'd want to choose only the best.
Anyway, thank you for your question & for dropping by my blog. :)
His Ms. Vance, kung okay lang po, puwede po ba kayo mag-post ng link ng fee sample scripts or excerpts from actual actual scripts? As guide lang po. Thanks po!
ReplyDeleteHello po! Pasensiya na po, in as much as I wanted to help you guys to get in, I don't have much time po. You can probably buy Ricky Lee's Trip to Quaipo book, madami po kayong matututunan about the basics in scriptwriting sa nasabing book.
Good luck po!
Hello! Are we required to use the Filipino language in the script that we will be submitting together with our application form? Cause it says there that we should be highly skilled in Filipino medium, though I am fluent in the Filipino medium, I still want to submit my English script for the first screening. Is that okay? Or a Filipino script is really required? Do you know any of your co-applicants before who submitted an English script but was still accepted? THANK YOU!!! :))))))
ReplyDeleteHello! As far as I know, it is the applicant's prerogative on what medium he's going to use upon submitting his sample works/scripts. But it is mandatory to use the Filipino language once you get passed the screening depending on the theme/genre you are requested to do during the actual workshop itself.
DeleteYes, I remember two batchmates of mine who submitted scripts they made in English prior to the interview. Bear in mind though that most of ABS shows and movies are in the vernacular, but if you really think you'll do better in English scripts, then do so. I'm sure they will see your potentials too, no matter what language you use.
In the end, language isn't what's important, but ho you thread each story, how you make twists more exciting & make the plot and climax not predictable. As long as it has wit & humor, smart enough for an audience, I'm sure you'll do fine, regardless if it's done in English or Filipino.
Hello po. I am one of the applicant sa Ricky Lee workshop. Nagvalidate ng information about me and my expectations sa workshop. Ang sabi eh, shortlisted raw ako. Tatawagan raw nila ako ulit. Ganun rin ba ang nangyari sayo dati?
ReplyDeleteThanks po.
hello there! Yes, the same thing happened to me. Ganun naman po talaga ang screening process eh, may mga call back and everything. Ang importante po ay yung patience at passion, yun pong drive natin into doing what we want. Madami pong applicants, as far as i know, ABS will really select only the cream of the crop. So just be patient and pray that your application will be granted with a positive one.
DeleteSa akin po kasi experience, it took around 2 months before I got a call back. Eh nasa Press Junket po ako sa Coron, Palawan that time nung tumawag ang ABS sa akin. So the very next day, I flew back to Manila and straight from the airport, I went straight to ABS to report. Ganun po ako kainteresado kahit pagod po ako and all, and they seemed to appreciate that effort I've made. So, eventually they said I'm in and I couldn't be happier! Hope the same thing happens to all my blog's readers. Thanks! :)
Hello Ms.Vance.^^Thanks for
ReplyDeletesharing what you know about the workshop, and for patiently answering our questions about it.=)
Napaka detailed po ng mga sagot ninyo and I know na gusto nyo talagang makatulong sa amin na talagang interesado.
Naiintindihan ko na po yung details, thanks for your help.=)
Ang question ko na lang po siguro is about the material na isusubmit namin.Kailangan po ba talaga buong script ang ipapasa,as in from start to finish,or can we just choose some scenes at yun ang iinclude namin sa sample?ok din po ba na yung ibang ipasa poems?thanks and may God Bless you more.^^
You are very much welcome po. I am happy to know na na-appreciate po ninyo yung effort ko in answering all the questions and inquiries regarding the workshop. :)
DeleteMy answer to your question po, yes, I think it is mandatory that you send them a full length script rather than some scenes alone. In our case, we were asked to write different genre as well as script for gags. If you're a comedian by heart, you could submit gag scripts din naman. I would suggest that you call ABS-CBN management or HR to further be sure what it is that they exactly need? Kaya be careful po. :) If you're kinda wary with stealing of ideas, I guess it would be okay if you just pass a portion of your script (showing highlight scenes), and then tell your reasons for doing so. Perhaps they would understand po. But again, to be sure you better call them.
Poems are not part of the scriptwriting workshop so tingin ko po di siya kailangan. Sa Siliman Writers Fellowship po yan pwede. :)
I hope I'm able to help you and that I did answer your question. I'd like to reiterate that what I had just said was simply my humble opinion. God bless din po, thank you & good luck pong muli! I honestly hope you guys can make it! And when you do, wag po sana kayong makakalimot! :)
Hello po Ms. Vance. May nabasa po akong blog post sa noringai.blogspot.com na not more than 5 pages ang material na dapat i-submit
DeleteHi, Anonymous! If you were able to read that one from noringai, then you better believe it because she's one of my batchmates--Noreen Capili, who is still a writer at ABS! I believe, she knows more information that I can give since she's still working & is still connected with ABS (remember that I am no longer with them), so she probably knows what's going to happen, right? So if she said not more than 5 pages, then so be it. I don't think the judges will have time to read a full-length script either. Thanks for that info!
DeleteOnce again, thanks Ms.Vance.^^I'm so grateful that you reminded me about the copyright thing, kasi honestly hindi ko na naisip yun, buwis buhay na talagang ipapasa ko na lang.^^
ReplyDeletesadly though di pa ako tapos,I'm giving myself until next week and puyatan nato simula bukas para matapos ko na rin.^^Last night,I came across this link http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/06/18/12/ricky-lee-hold-scriptwriting-workshops
-and medjo nagtaka ako kasi sabi ni sir ricky 5 pages lang daw ang kailangan. honestly mas maganda sana pag full script, pero you're right, dapat iconfirm ko na.I should call the HR dept.tomorrow para no worries na. ^^ according to the interview eh last time na may workshop more than 5 thousand ang nag-submit ng mga sinulat nila so I was like, wow...mahirap talaga makapasok pero I should give it a try.Kung hindi I'm sure may next time pa pero yun na nga, since nasimulan ko na at madami namang sumusuporta(like you,Ms.Vance)edi tatapusin ko na,kahit ano maging result ang importante din is happy ako at prang di na gano boring life ko kc I'm looking forward to something.^^ Sana nga po mabigyan kami ng chance.^^I'll inform u about the result.=)At siyempre,di ko makakalimutan ang effort mo na matulungan kami, kahit anong result.^^Take care.^^I'll keep in touch.^^
Hi there! According to my fellow batchmate, not more than 5 pages lang daw po yung sample script. I was also told po that ABS will only accept around 150 scriptwriting workshop participants for this batch. And they will be conducting the interviews from July 8-15. So I do hope you're able to get in. When you do, please let me know po ha. I'd be very happy for you if ever. If not, don't be sad, there will always be a next time. So once again, good luck! :)
Deletehi,ms Vance... Katatawag lang po ng HR ng abs-cbn ahm nagtatanong lang po sila about sa information kung employed ba ko or unemployed, kung willing po ko magwork after 3months, and tatawagan daw nila ko for interview pero tinanong ko kung qualified po ba ko? sabi po yes, pero kasi di ganun kagaling ang pagsagot ko ng english, kinabahan kasi ko,di kaya makaka apekto yung gramar ko sa pagsagot sa pagtawag nya? gusto ko matuwa syempre na appreciate yung kwento ko,pero nalungkot ako kasi baka sa pagsagot ko na english eh d ako tawagan, ano po kaya? thank you so much, first time ko sumali kasi nagsusulat na ko pero mga friends ko lang ang reader ko, thank you!!! GODBLESS!!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Apple! Thanks for dropping by my blog & leaving a comment on this post. I think okay lang po yun, I'm sure whoever called you will understand your first time jitters. Besides, mababait naman ang mga taga-HR ng ABS, when you get to meet them, please say my hello to ms. Lalaine Coching. She's one of the most approachable person you'll ever encounter at ABS. My advice for you is to pray hard and relax. As long as you know in your heart that you've done your best, that's okay. If it's not meant for you, then so be it. But if it's really for you, it will be. That's why you need to pray for God's will. Good luck, I do hope you'll get in, and when you do, let me know po. Paki-balitaan naman ako. Salamat!
DeleteHi Vance,
ReplyDeleteThank you for accomodating the questions of your blog readers.
In relation to the question posted above, im not really much into scriptwriting, but I would love to learn how to make one. As far as I know, Ricky Lee is also a novelist.
I know this is a scriptwriting workshop and part of the requirements is a sample work. Iyon po ang concern ko. I do not have sample scripts, but I have a sample short story or novel.
Will they still consider my application if I do not have a sample script, but instead a sample novel?
Do you know if any of your batchmates did the same?
TIA.
Hello there! Sorry for the late reply. Yes, you're correct that sir Ricky Lee is also a novelist. I would suggest that you pass a part of that short story you've written as your sample script. Or perhaps, you can try to check that with the ABS HR. Kasi you have to understand that this isn't Mr. Ricky Lee's project alone, he has partnered with both Star Cinema and ABS-CBN. But perhaps your novel can be turned into a teleserye one day, that sounds exciting di po ba? So for me, there's no harm in trying. All you need to do is to ask. Good luck po! :)
Deletehi vance,
ReplyDeleteam interested to join. if i send my work, are they going to take is as theirs since it is not yet register for copyright...
Hi Anonymous! That's what you should be careful about. I'm not saying that you shouldn't trust the people at ABS, that's not what I mean. But you can never tell kasi, it's your idea, the credit must be yours & yours alone. Submit a script not more than 5 pages, that's all they ever need. And hurry, because they would only accept 150 participants for the workshop. Once you get in, it's still a race out there--those that would be fast-tracked can work already at ABS/Star Cinema, actually. If you send your work, I can't guarantee that they will not use it or they will, it's all up to you to take the risk. Good luck!
Deletethanks a lot po =D
ReplyDeleteYou're always welcome Chris! Let me know lang po on how I could be of help. It's my pleasure to help! Thanks & good luck! :)
Because I still go to school. Thank you po! :)
ReplyDeletehello! Hindi po kailangan bumili ng kahit ano. Suggestion ko lang po na bumili kayo ng book na Trip to Quaipo ni Sir Ricky Lee if you're really serious in getting into scriptwriting as a job. But it's not really a requirement. Ang alam ko po, final screenings will be held from July 8-15. I'm not sure about the schedule of the workshop itself, sorry. Thanks!
God Bless! :)
DeleteI don't really have scripts but fanfictions. I read that only 5 pages max. are required and I think my stories can't fit in 5 pages alone. Do you have any suggestions for me? THANKYOU. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Good day Ms.Vance!
Hi, Krista Rica! Thanks for dropping by my blog. Again, it does not matter if you did not properly answered them in English, or if you were not super impressive sa phone. Basta paghandaan mo na yung actual interview if ever, kasi diba first impression lasts? So no worries!
DeleteThank you Ms.Vance.
DeleteThanks again! =)
Hello again Krista Rica! My prayers are with you dear. Good luck & when you do get in, please balitaan mo naman ako ha. Thanks!
DeleteHello, I wish to join but I live here in the USA. Sana meron din silang workshops dito abroad. Any idea if they're conducting free workshops here in the States?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hello! Sorry I think this is open only to those living in the Philippines. But if you are really interested, then I would suggest that you send them a letter of intention and probably a sample script. Those that will be part of the said workshop po kasi will be later absorbed into some of Star Cinema and Abs-Cbn's projects and programs.
DeleteGood evening Ms. Vance. I am interested with script writing workshop. May I please know po if Mr. Ricky Lee have a schedule for Davao City? Thank you and more power!
ReplyDeleteHi! I don't think Mr. Ricky Lee will have a Davao leg for this. Although this workshop is open to all Filipinos nationwide, ABS will not cover expenses for travels & board & lodging. So if you really want to give it a try, you may do so but at your own risk & expense. Hopefully if this workshop becomes successful again, they might raise the bar & bring this to other parts of the country including Davao. I suggest you write ABS and tell them about it. Thanks!
DeleteHi Ms. Vance! Reiterating the appreciation of taking time to answer our queries. Thanks a lot. What if I don't have a sample script, but blog entries? I used to have a blog when I was a full time housewife but wasn't able to update it when I went back to work. Now, I resigned from work again and about to revive my blog. Do you think it's okay if I'll submit some of my blog entries instead? I don't want to pressure myself to write a script agad-agad ngayon, the "creative juices" are not always on our side/present, I know you get what I mean. And hope you won't mind, can I ask how long were you connected then to ABS? Again, thanks a lot!
ReplyDeletehello everybody. ' ' im nobody from isabela. i just want to say that all of us are very interested in this work shop hope na sana more of us maging kagaya ni mr. ricky lee. hope that we have a lot of chance na maging professional. i may say na may alam ako sa pag susulat pero bkt ganun when i went to high school parang napakahirap para saking maging professional although i write something na inaact namin sa stage. hahaha sobrang nakaka chalenge for me kase ako na director ako pa ung main character. pero d naging madali sakin kase i write but im too bad for writing. sabi nila pag writer ka ng mga story or ng mga songs dapat maganda sulat mo pero ako i know na may alam ako sa pag susulat PERO D PA AKO PROFESSIONAL PANG SCHOOL LANG AKO HEHEHE im dreaming that someday i became a scriptwriter pero sa hirap namin d na cguro mag kakatototo un. ='(
ReplyDeleteSorry for the super late reply. Yes, sana nga Mr. Lee will hold workshops in several areas such as yours. Writing onstage is very different from writing for tv or movie. It includes more visuals po kasi plus if there will be cinematic effects involve. But it also had similarities as well.
DeleteWag po kayo mawalan ng pag-asa, who knows eventually you will realize your dream. It entails patience and hard work, if it's for you, it will be. Good luck!
kaialangan po ba talaga as in script? kasi ang nakalagay po dun sa requirement sample work/ script? so akala ko pwede anything filipino, ang pinasa ko po kasi parang essay type. so hindi na ba macoconsider yun pra mgkaron ng chance makapasok sa workshop?
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply...If it's a sample requirement that they need, by all means it is. If it's an essay type, don't you think it's obvious that you have failed to follow their requirement? But just the same, I hope they would consider. Good luck!
DeleteHi Ms. Vance!
ReplyDeleteI know this is a near stupid question but for the interviews will they be expecting you to be in business attire like a job interview would? Thank you! :D
Hi, sorry for the super late reply. I've been very busy. No, I don't think they are expecting you to be in business suit. Just smart casual will do. Not naman super casual like t-shirt or baggy jeans, but something that would fit in the office though not really considered as formal clothes. Good luck!
DeleteNung time po ninyo Ms.Vance what po ang schedule ng workshop?
ReplyDeleteDuring my time, they had it after lunch. Once or twice a week. Good luck!
DeleteHello po Ms. Vance, I just submitted my sample work, CV et for the workshop. Gusto ko lang po mag-thank you kasi nag-effort talaga kayo to answer all our queries as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to be a writer pero ngayon lang nagkalakas ng loob :). It's people like you who make my dream easier.
It's my pleasure to help people/aspirants like you. Thanks for dropping by my site. Good luck. I wish you well.
Deletehi ms. vance. i need your help! abs cbn called me a while back, and they asked me about my application for this workshop. ehh i had no signal that time kaya i was not able to understand what she was saying. parang may narinig akong sunday and that they will call me next week. so i am not sure whether i have to be there on sunday or i would just have to wait for their call. i texted her number and asked for clarifications pero hindi sya nagreply. so, i am worried. baka kailangan kong pumunta eh. thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt's no longer my fault na wala kang signal at that time they called you. I don't think I can do anything for you. I am sorry. But I wish you luck!
Salamat!
Deletehi there! yung girlfriend ko kasi ay na interview na for the scriptwriting workshop. i would just like to ask kung hanggang kailan sasabihin ang mga natanggap. and kung hindi ba natanggap ay tatawagan din. thanks! my girlfriend is a fresh graduate sa UP Los Baños, ComArts. and, next year ba eh pwede akong sumali? i'm a sophomore DevCom student from UP Los Baños din. nakita ko kasi na batchmates nung author ay may regular college student. hehe. nagbabakasakali lang :D thanks!
Kasama po ako sa mga na interview...magkakaroon po ba kami ng info kung pumasa po kami o hindi? yung mga nakilala ko po during the day of exam and interview are also texting me and asking if I have the info about our status.
DeleteThank you and God bless.
Hi Ms. Vance..
ReplyDeleteSaludo po ako sa pagsagot mo ng lahat ng katanungan regarding the said workshop. Nakatulong ka po talaga.
Actually po, isa ako sa nag-apply at naka-sama sa screening.. but until now, wala pong callback from the HR.
I know, God has a perfect plan for me. :)
May God bless you more. :)
Sumasaludo,
Shella Salud
I wonder kung may results na po. Congratulations sa mga natanggap kung meron na! Thanks Ms. Vance.
ReplyDeleteGood day, Miss Vance!
ReplyDeleteI was already interviewed by the HR department a few weeks ago and was asked again by the HR of the publishing department to have an interview tomorrow and even bring my works. Are there really series of interviews like that before the workshop? Thanks.
hey ms.vance!
ReplyDeleteuhmmm..
Hi Ms Vance, I have the same concern with others here.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI don't know if some of you are still following this blog but as of today, Sept. 25, di pa rin nagsastart ang workshop. I am one of those na nakasama sa 500 na shortlist out of the thousands na nag-apply, nahirapan yata ang HR pumili ng 150 finalists (baka walang nagustuhan...or maraming magaling-hehehehe) so na delay yung announcement... mid-october ang final announcement and late-oct yata ang start nung workshop proper...starting nung friday, hr was sending out regret emails to those na better luck next time, and the rest are in final deliberation... thanks, hope this info helped... :)
Nagpapaworkshop pa din ba?
ReplyDeleteEvery year po nagpapa-workshop sila looking for new talents and those with potentials become part of their CDG (creative development group) as brainstormers. But with Sir Ricky Lee, ngayon po wala po muna. Please follow my blog, I will be posting another opportunity for would-be scriptwriters soon. Watch out for that. Thank you.
