The Things I Have Learned from Smart Parenting Mom Workshop 2: All About School-Aged Kids

You’ve seen smart kids, I assume. They are the ones who could perform and render a song without hesitation or show off their terpsichorean talent. Most of us wonder, what did the parents of these kids do to make them this smart? Nope, it’s definitely not because of their formula milk. Understanding how parents can help their kids maximize their full potential is very important especially during the crucial stage. And these are exactly what Purple Plum Fairy has learned during the recent Smart Parenting Magazine's Mom Workshop dubbed as “All About School-Aged Kids” held recently at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas.

According to the experts, stimulation starts as soon as the child is conceived. It is indeed significant to stimulate the child’s brain which parents would often overlook because we’re too busy taking care of our children’s needs. But it is at these earliest years of life when the child’s brain record sensory experiences which can greatly affect his growing up and learning. 

“When you’re a parent you need to put on a lot of hats—be a jack of all trades. Our workshop allow our readers to learn from experts and exchange notes with fellow parents,” said Lei Dimarucut-Sison, Smartparenting.com.ph’s managing editor.  “Two of the most challenging tasks of a parent are bringing out the child’s artistic skills and home-schooling.”

 Education consultant and mom of two teens, Chary Mercado spoke about her own experience when it came to developing a child’s creativity.  Resource speaker Milona Barraca shared tips on homeschooling your child. Both had also acknowledged that every child’s first and best teachers are still his parents. Some people may not agree with me, but I don’t believe in tutors. I believe we’re in a better position than anyone else to study our child as an individual. We’d know how he learns best, what encourages him and how to challenge him.

Former Smart Parenting art director Jen Inumerable-Suarez showed Mommies some art crafts that we could make use during parties which may also be useful to keep our pre-schoolers hands busy and productive while encouraging them to be creative. Event sponsors Insular Life gave a small talk on financial literacy while Elica had a brief talk on the prevention and cure of skin eczema in children. Calpol also talked about its campaign called Allied Against Dengue. 

There were booth games where Moms had a chance to win exciting prizes.

Mommies had a lot of fun as we worked on art and crafts despite the torrential rains outside the building that Saturday afternoon. There were also products on sale that offered huge discounts for all attendees. Plus a cute photobooth for free courtesy of Elica. 

Lucky attendees also went home with awesome prizes from generous sponsors. Discovery Suites provided sumptuous buffet and even gave each moms a cute cupcake to bring home.
