Looking for the One this Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day has got to be my least favorite time of the year (yes, apart from Christmas Day. I know I'm such a Grinch. But that's another story.) Oh, boy, another miser sourgraping her dateless existence. I could almost hear couples hollering.

What I hate most about Heart's Day is that everybody seems to be nauseatingly mushy and lovey-dovey that you'd wonder if they are so genuinely feel for each other or because the occasion only calls for it. Besides, since when did being in love equate to being sucky?

But before you get the wrong signals, let me get this straight, I'm not a member of the Love Sucks Club. Despite being a singleton (and a big possibility of ending up a spinster in the future), I am an absolute believer of love.

And yes, I am human. I've been in love and heartbroken--and I'll just leave it at that. I may be cynic when it comes to a lot of things but I am a true hopeless romantic by heart. I could also be girly-girl in the sense that I believe there really is somebody out there who belongs for each one of us. I may not have found him yet. I'm not just quite sure if I have found him or I still need to find the One that's meant for me. He may just be around for all I know. The only thing I can do is to satisfy myself with the memories of two of my ex-fictitious boyfriends, Chris Evans (yes, Captain America himself) and Ian Somerhalder (of Vampire Diaries fame). Guess, neither of them are "The One" for me too.

This is how you'll find me during Valentine's Day, staring at the window or reading a good book in hand.

And just like a lot of girls, I'm in love with the idea of being in love. When I got obsessed with the movie 10 Things I Hate About You back in high school, I imagined somebody creating a public scene by serenading me with Can't Take My Eyes Off You in the school quadrangle or campus gymnasium the way Heath Ledger did to Julia Stiles. I also loved how Dermot Mulroney danced with his best friend Julia Roberts in the film "My Best Friend's Wedding." I swear, I cried buckets while watching the said scene.

And yes, I've always imagined somebody sweeping me off my feet b saying something straight out of a Hollywood romantic comedy or some hugot scenes with emotional dialogues from our own local movies. I'd like to hear those with matching a bouquet of blue roses or purple tulips for me (or if not a bouquet, even a single flower will do). My personal pick? Eric Stolz's message to her tomboyish best friend played by Mary Stuart Masterson, after she wore a pair of earrings he originally gave another girl he thought he liked before he realized that her best friend is really the one he loves in the '80s teen flick Some Kind of Wonderful. "You look good wearing my future."

I've always wanted to receive a blue rose (not a painted one) from a special guy ever since I was a kid.

If a blue rose isn't possible, purple tulips are my next bet.

But I don't believe that one should go out of her way consciously looking for The One. I pray that God will send me that special guy for me pretty soon. I'll be turning 40 in three years time. And by then, if the guy for me seems to have gotten lost his way, then perhaps he may never find his way to me. I'm willing to embrace the life of single blessedness.

I maybe going through another Valentine's Day without any special date to speak of. But since I've got three more years left, I'm not giving up believing in love and hoping for 'The One" to find me soon. For now, allow me to find simple happiness in Nicholas Sparks, Mitch Albom and Paulo Coelho's books as well as those of Teddie Nguyen's Facebook Page status. They're enough to keep my sanity and keep my hopes up for that "Mr. Right" to finally come along my way.
