Invest in Foreign and International Stocks with new Sun Life Prosperity World Equity Index Feeder Fund

Whether you’re looking to strengthen your portfolio through diversification or create new avenues to explosive growth, international stocks can be an excellent component in your overall investment strategy. While it is undeniable how Covid-19 pandemic has affected the entire world, speculation around the projected global market impact of the virus continues to evolve. And trends have emerged around industries experiencing growth despite the pandemic and the challenges that come with sudden high demand. Across the world, uncertainty around Covid-19 has coincided with lower growth and tighter financial conditions. And this impact is already visible and felt in countries like the Philippines, one of the countries most impacted by the virus. Global foreign investments have also projected to decline by 40% in 2020. This could cause lasting damage to global production and supply chains.

The extent of the global market impact depends on how quickly the international community can mitigate the spread of the virus and somehow reboot their economies. And so will the recovery of the hardest-hit industries, like travel, tourism, retail, and hospitality. While the spread of Covid-19 is certainly having cascading impacts on several industries, others are seeing significant growth.

E-Commerce as a whole is booming. But the impacts of COVID-19 on online shopping vary greatly from one industry to the next. Filipinos have turned to online shopping and food deliveries to help them weather quarantine. Unsurprisingly, many companies seeing unprecedented growth solve consumers’ stay-at-home needs without a heavy reliance on physical, cross-border supply chains. Mobile app downloads and usage have been growing quickly across the board. People under quarantine have looked for digital alternatives to their out-of-home activities and for new ways to stay entertained. For some companies, the pandemic-driven increase in demand has come with increased scrutiny. So it’s been essential for them to pivot quickly to allay consumer fears and maintain brand sentiment.

Rapid expansion for international economies, increased productivity, and improving standards of living are leading to the rise of a new global middle class, and these trends suggest that the world’s most dramatic growth over the next century. With more than a thousand publicly traded stocks in the global market, why not venture into international stocks? Contrary to the belief of others, investing in international stocks can reduce your risk--and may even bolster your gains. When you're just learning how to invest in stocks, going global may seem daunting. But it needn't be.

I recently attended a webinar about the latest product from Sun Life Prosperity called Sun Life Prosperity World Equity Index Feeder Fund. This coincides Foreign markets present opportunities you’d miss out on if your holdings were strictly limited to Philippine-based stocks. While non-domestic companies sometimes come with added risk factors, international stocks also tend to be cheaply valued relative to comparable businesses in other parts of the globe.

World Equity Index Feeder Fund [WEIFF] aims to track the performance of the MSCI and ACWI. WEIFF invests at least 90% of its asset in a target fund. It allows investors to use their Philippine pesos to access the global markets. So what are the benefits of making an investment with Sun Life Prosperity World Equity Index Feeder Fund?

  • You can invest in companies worldwide. You can buy stocks from more popular companies like Apple, Nestle, Alibaba, Facebook, and Amazon.
  • You have access to global stock market for a minimum of P50,000.
  • Diversify globally for long-term growth.

Before investing in international stocks, consider how much risk you’re comfortable taking on and whether you want to invest in developed economies, emerging markets, or both. While emerging markets grow faster, they also tend to be more volatile. By establishing clear, realistic goals for your non-domestic investments, you’ll be in better shape to ride out bouts of market turbulence and pursue long-term gains.

It is important to invest in a fund that matches your long-term horizon. Capitalize on stocks in developed and emerging markets. Diversify your investment portfolio. Enjoy potentially high returns. Get closer to your long-term financial goals.

Once you feel comfortable dipping your toes into foreign waters, build up the international portion of your portfolio slowly — perhaps through dollar-cost averaging, a strategy of regularly buying an investment, irrespective of its price.

You know the idiom: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. This advice is especially important when investing, because diversification is important, e
ven though we live in an increasingly interdependent global economy, stock  returns.

Investing and trading in stocks is a good starting point for Filipino investors. Even though local stocks has its advantages, it still pales in comparison to foreign stocks in terms of profits. This is where Filipinos feel limited when investing—the lack of opportunity for global investments. It’s no wonder given the many benefits of foreign over local investments.

Having a foreign portfolio investment allows investors to participate in a global diversification of portfolio assets. Investors who hold stocks in various countries are likely less susceptible to the vulnerable market movements over their portfolios. This opens the door for higher risk-adjusted returns.

Despite being a broader industry than the local landscape, foreign markets set a less competitive playing field. In turn, having an international credit (for foreign investments) and international portfolio diversification reduces risks and boosts your gains.

To yield long-term growth, your investments are placed into the MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI). So how is this new product from Sun Life different from Sun Life's World Voyager? With World Voyager, although it is also a dollar space, it is actively managed. WIEFF on the other hand, has passively managed fund but it is also an efficient way to invest offshore.

How much amount is needed to invest in the Sun Life Prosperity World Equity Index Feeder Fund (WEIFF)? The minimum initial investment is only P50,000 while the minimum additional investments is P10,000. The new Sun Life Prosperity World Equity Index Feeder Fund (WEIFF) is fit for investors with an aggressive risk appetite, who are looking for long-term capital appreciation.

In a nutshell, they would put our capital into a large overseas fund that invests in global stocks. In my personal opinion, as I listened to the webinar conducted by Sun Life Philippines, I think Filipinos need a more aggressive risk tolerance and have always thought about global investing. These are the few marketplaces where we can put our money to work without much hassle.

Of course, it's crucial that we study the economic conditions first and weigh our investment principles, goals, costs, and prospective gains before we dive head-first.

The spread of COVID-19 has thrown the global market into a state of flux. Countries are in varying stages of coping with the pandemic and its fallout. And while some industries are clearly coming out ahead in the current situation, that success can come with significant challenges.

As the world settles into its “new normal.” Everyone will adjust to the halfway point between life as they’ve known it and their new tech-dependent, virtual existence. As that happens, localization and user experience will become crucial to meeting their evolving expectations and driving brand growth.

My Honest Product Review on Abbott FreeStyle Libre System

Diabetes mellitus is a common and debilitating disease that affects a variety of organs which eventually will have complications if not managed properly.

Diabetes is often asymptomatic. I actually had no idea I had it for years until one late afternoon sometime in 2015 while I was being driven home by my ex-boyfriend, I noticed my eyes were bleeding. The thing was, nobody would even know that my eyes were bleeding (apart from myself) because it’s at the back of my eyes and only I would see it.  I was so scared I thought I’m going to be blind right then and there. What has triggered the bleeding was that I didn’t notice I’ve had four glasses of iced tea that day because the event I went to was held outdoors and I had no choice but to have iced tea because I don’t drink alcohol, and potable water wasn’t available. The event was held in a posh hotel’s penthouse, just beside the swimming pool. So you can imagine how humid it must be on a summer day. I was probably too thirsty that I ended up drinking more iced tea than I should have.

After a thorough eye checkup, I was advised to immediately see an endocrinologist find out if I have diabetes. Then immediately after that, I was scheduled to undergo a pan-retinal laser procedure because my retina specialist found out I have proliferative diabetic retinopathy. I could vividly recall, the first time I heard from my endocrinologist that I have type 2 diabetes after suffering from ruptured eye veins—it felt like a life sentence. I knew this health condition will be having complications if not properly managed. I have also read an article that said diabetic patients will have shorter lives as compared to those who do not have them. I am also aware that my food choices had to change as well as that of my lifestyle should I want to live longer and also to prevent further damage to my possible complications.

My endocrinologist said I may have had diabetes for around 10 years before I was diagnosed because according to him it takes that long for one to develop retinopathy. Since I don’t go to regular checkups, I had no idea I have it. So if you’re reading this blog entry, please, please have yourself check.

Diabetes can have serious health implications that affect life expectancy. The impact depends on various factors, such as how soon a person receives a diagnosis and treatment, and how well they and their healthcare team manage the said condition. Other influential factors include the severity and progression of symptoms, any complications, and how the body responds to treatment.

Moving forward, just like I said early on, the minute I was told I had diabetes, it felt like I had been given a life sentence. I knew life would never be the same again for me. I was only 35 years old when I was diagnosed but my complications were that of someone in her 60’s. I also used to do food blogging which probably made my diabetes even worse. My doctors assured me that the effects of early intervention and diagnosis as well as total lifestyle changes along with medications and other supporting tools can make my life feels normal as possible.

It’s been 5 years since my diagnosis. And believe me, living with type 2 diabetes isn’t a walk in the park. I had to take maintenance medications like Metformin and Glimepiride. I also take Chromium Picolinate, Magnesium and Lutein as food supplements. For my eyes, I also have maintenance eye drops called Timolol Maleate to prevent glaucoma. And I had to get used to all those painful finger pricking every single day routine using my self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) and buy such expensive lancets. Of course, I also had to learn to limit my sugar intake. I also had to change the way I used to eat, my diet, and all that stuff.

For years, I was an emotional eater and I never really knew it would eventually take its toll on my health. If only I could turn back time, I would’ve chosen a healthier lifestyle. And my doctors assured me that diabetes nowadays is more manageable. With the latest innovation and medication, there’s nothing to fear. I can still live my life as normal as possible. The key is basically being aware of your health-being, proper medication and regular checkups can do so much to manage diabetes as a whole. With early diagnosis and effective management, people can expect to live as long as those without diabetes and to have a good quality of life.

The Abbott FreeStyle Libre System

I recently stumbled upon an innovative product called FreeStyle Libre by Abbott Laboratories. The first time I came across this product was when I saw it on the arm of my officemate at the hotel I was working at. It was something that piqued my interest since I am also a type 2 diabetic like him.

Purple Plum Fairy had just discovered the wonders of technology with this life-changing diabetic tool called FreeStyle Libre System--a technology made specifically for diabetes management

Tinig ng Bayan SONAGKAISA Online Free Concert

Tinig ng Bayan Sonagkaisa Concert

There have been a number of online concerts done by popular performers and artists for the benefit of Covid-19 patients and to help our fellowmen to cope up with the pandemic that we're all facing. It is during times like these that we need each other--a shoulder to cry on, an extra ear to listen to, a hand to comfort us and also a bit of entertainment to make us smile amidst the difficulties. Sometimes all we need is a little bit of help to overcome the depression and stress this virus has affected us one way or another.

Only four months ago, an online concert would have been an inconceivable idea, almost as inconceivable as a global pandemic, more inconceivable still is a free online concert like Tinig ng Bayan. With a talent lineup that would have been difficult to bring together even in pre-pandemic times, Tinig ng Bayan will probably be THE concert event of this time of adversity.

In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we may not have flattened the curve yet, but time and again through it all, Filipinos have shown resiliency, perseverance, and even ingenuity. Thanks to COVID-19, we have learned to live, work and even have fun in different and even innovative ways. Perhaps the most ambitiously innovative concert in this time, the Tinig ng Bayan Concert will be a one of a kind testament to the indomitable Filipino spirit.

With a virtual gathering of some of the greatest talents the country has ever produced performing in one unparalleled online concert event that will likely never happen again whether live or online, Tinig ng Bayan promises to be not just an epic music event, but a historical one and this bit of history will never repeat itself.

Brought together by love of country, and the greater good, Tinig ng Bayan will feature the likes of Martin Nievera, Kakie Pangilinan, Jim Paredes, and Boboy Garovillo, Noel Cabangon, Kean Cipriano, Johnoy Danao, Agot Isidro, Iza Calzado , Mylene Dizon, Enchong Dee, Ria Atayde and the League of AKTOR, Odette Quesada, Celeste Legaspi, Mitch Valdes, Bituin Escalante, Bayang Barrios, The Company, Bullet Dumas, Moonstar 88, True Faith, Baihana, Toma Cayabyab, Arman Ferrer, Jesuit Music Ministry, PETA, and so many more.

The Philippines will weather COVID-19 as it has weathered so many crises before it, and ultimately emerge triumphantly. Till then, we can enjoy Tinig ng Bayan, which will run on July 27, Monday, 3 to 6 pm. The event will live-streamed on Radyo Katipunan 87.9.

Why we need emojis more than ever

Press Release:

In the era of COVID-19, face-to-face communication is a rarity. As people around the world are distancing themselves from one another to protect ourselves from the pandemic, we’ve found ourselves leaning on technology—from group chats to video calls—to have conversations. While we’ve gotten so used to sending quick messages, we fail to realize how much of our meaning and intent may be falling by the wayside as we exchange words.

Prof. Albert Mehrabian, a pioneer of the understanding of communications since the 1960s, however,  established the importance of non-verbal cues in communicating with each other. His research emphasized that in communicating one’s feelings and attitudes, only 7% of a message comes from the words that are spoken, while the 38% is in the tone and manner of speaking and 55% in facial expression or body language, which telegraphs emotions more precisely than words may be able to.

My First Visit at Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic

Purple Plum Fairy visits Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic at SM North Edsa The Block for the first time

For a lot of people, a visit to a chiropractor is a necessity only when they get twisted or when they have a stiff neck. In reality, you may not even be aware of it, but you might have a problem with your spine and wouldn’t know it unless you see a specialist. Your headache, neck pain, and even knee pain may be caused by a small dislocation.

Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic reception area welcomes you with a smile from their staff so you'd feel right at home & comfortable.

If you’ve never visited a chiropractor before, chances are you might be as clueless as I am. Just like me, you must be wondering what to expect during your first visit at the chiropractor. I had so many questions going on in my mind prior to my visit: “Will it hurt afterwards?” “Will they be requiring me to have my spinal X-ray? I was so excited yesterday while I was accompanied by my fiancé Jason (who also became my personal driver and photographer at the time. Thanks, hun!) during my first visit to Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic at SM North Edsa, The Block. What exactly goes on during the chiropractic appointment? Read on and find out as I share with you what has happened during my first appointment.

The clinic has a cozy vibe to make patients comfortable

On the wall is a corner where one can read the patients' testimonials

When my fiancé Jason and I arrived at the Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic yesterday, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. Although I have been to a chiropractic clinic before but the experience was different since I had only interviewed the chiropractor at the time yet there was no first-hand experience.

The minute I stepped inside Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic, I was immediately greeted by their friendly and professional staff. I was asked to fill out a paper with all the necessary information including the pain I had been experiencing in the past 6 months. Once I had completed the form, I was then taken in to see their in-house chiropractic doctor, Dr. Nick Fleming. Dr. Fleming is an American, born and raised in Minnesota, USA. He went to the New College Science Institute and Life West Chiropractic College. He moved to Thailand where he also worked for 10 years where he was also introduced to integrative medicine and became the head chiropractor for a large clinic in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Fleming also took advance studies of chiropractic and healing arts. His specialization includes active release technique (used by athlete’s around the world), cranial nerve rehab and neurological testing and rehab.

Purple Plum Fairy awaits her Chiropractic doctor Nick Fleming inside the treatment room

Fleming discussed the symptoms that I had been experiencing in the past few months and he asked me some questions. I told him that there were some trigger points on my shoulder blades as well as some neck pains, occasional headaches, leg cramps, and feet issues. I also have problems with my posture as I got so used to being in a slouch position and my prolonged sitting also didn’t help at all. I used to put topical analgesics on them hoping the pain would get better on its own but it wasn’t getting any better so I thought it would be smart to visit Mabuhay Chiropractic Clinic and have myself checked.

No more game downtime with vivo V19 Neo’s large-capacity 4500mAh Li-Po battery

Nowadays, with people spending most of their time online, some have become dependent on electronic devices, especially smartphones, to keep them connected with friends and loved ones, and to conveniently pursue and enjoy their lifestyles.

And with different activities—messaging on various platforms, posting on social media, surfing the internet, buying from online stores, listening to music, watching movies and videos, and playing online games—keeping people busy on their smartphones wherever they may be, it would truly be disappointing to get a low battery warning, or the handset going “dead”.

Thankfully, the latest V19 Neo is powered by a 4500mAh lithium-polymer (Li-Po) battery, one of the largest capacities in its price range, to keep vivo’s flagship midrange smartphone running in optimum performance, longer. with its long-lasting Li-Po power source, the V19 Neo can accommodate Google, Gmail, Facebook, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, and other heavily used applications that can typically drain a standard battery.

The 4500mAh battery can also smoothly run the V19 Neo’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 AIE octa-core processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB ROM, making for fast app launches, better navigation and multi-tasking; and enabling users to play their favorite graphics-heavy mobile games for hours.

The handset is also equipped with AI Turbo, Center Turbo, Game Turbo, Net Turbo, Cooling Turbo, and ART++ Turbo. These multi-turbo functions offer an elevated and exciting gaming experience especially when playing PUBG Mobile, NBA 2K, Mobile Legends, Fortnite, or other favorite RPGs, shooters, SIMS, puzzle, strategy, racing, sports, and augmented reality games that will keep gamers up all night.

With a battery that powers up hours of game time, the V19 Neo also features an Ultra Game Mode which makes for totally undisturbed playing, blocking messages and alerts, so one can be fully immersed and engaged with the game.

And when the battery is about to be depleted, users can rely on the V19 Neo’s 18W dual-engine fast charging technology to juice up the 4500mAh power source in a flash, so they can quickly get back to winning their game.

Aside from its high-capacity battery and fast-charging technology, quadcore processor, and game modes, vivo’s flagship midrange smartphone also boasts of an Ultra O AMOLED capacitive touchscreen which makes the gaming experience even more thrilling.

The 6.44-inch FHD+ screen brings out the games’ vibrant and authentic colors without causing unnecessary eyestrain. Its low brightness anti-flicker technology also provides added protection for the eyes, especially when playing in low-light and dark conditions.

The V19 Neo is available in Crystal White and Admiral Blue colorways, for only P17,999 at authorized Vivo stores nationwide. To know more about the vivo V19 Neo, visit  https://www.vivo.com/ph/products/v19neo# or https://www.vivoglobal.ph/.

The Manila Hotel partially reopens: You are Safe Here

The Grand Lobby of The Manila Hotel will light up again as the hotel partially reopens on July 3, 2020

The historic hotel partially reopens in time for its 108th anniversary with upgraded hygiene protocols for guest safety, and launches special anniversary promo.

Just a day before the historic hotel’s founding anniversary, The Manila Hotel plans to partially open its doors to its valued guests, with the famed Café Ilang Ilang, the Lobby Lounge, and the Delicatessen resuming operations on July 3, 2020.

A rebirth of sorts after months of following the government’s quarantine protocols, the hotel has adjusted along with the rest of the world in navigating the “new normal,” and puts a high premium on the well-being of guests.

With the lobby shining bright anew signifying eternal hope, The Manila Hotel commemorates its 108 founding anniversary on July 4 by welcoming guests with an enduring brand of service that is now focused on enhanced health, hygiene, and sanitation protocols in line with DOH guidelines.

As the hotel prepares for the reopening, Atty Joey Lina, the president of The Manila Hotel, assures the public, “You are safe here. We have taken every precaution to heart so you and your loved ones can have peace of mind when you visit or stay with us.”

To its valued guests who are waiting for Café Ilang Ilang to open, The Manila Hotel offers its 108th Anniversary Promo that gives the first 108 customers for the first 108 days of its reopening (including Saturdays and Sundays) a special dining rate of only Php1,250 for lunch, and only Php1,550 for dinner. Café Ilang Ilang likewise returns with a new system for dining where guests can “order and eat all you can,” meaning they can order as much food as they want from the selection of dishes at a fixed price.

Both Café Ilang Ilang and the Lobby Lounge will be open with limited seating capacity. Thorough sanitation procedures will be implemented, and guests can order using a disposable menu, eat using cutlery in sealed containers, and even use tables with acrylic dividers. Front-facing personnel communicating with guests like Guest Services Officers (GSOs) and waiters will don masks, gloves, and face shields. To limit contact with guests, Café Ilang Ilang is also fine-tuning its contactless ordering and payment system.

Adopting best practices, the hotel launches a comprehensive initiative to assure its patrons they are safe at The Manila Hotel. High-traffic public areas will have hygiene reminder signages and distance indicators, and guests will be asked to undergo mandatory temperature checks, and health declaration procedure. Limited capacity will also be implemented in elevators, while several hotel facilities will remain closed including the spa, swimming pool, gym, and other areas.

High-touch points like door handles, elevator buttons, public area furniture, and others will be sanitized multiple times per day using UV technology. Tests reveal that UV sanitation greatly reduces the bacteria count on surfaces, as demonstrated by lower RLU readings—whose value is used as a measure of surface cleanliness--after the procedure.

Barring announcements from the government to the contrary, the hotel also plans to start accepting room bookings by August 2020. The public will be assured of rooms thoroughly cleaned first with UV-C light technology to eliminate germs, bacteria, and viruses; followed by medical-grade sterilizing and disinfecting solutions. A change of fresh and sanitized linens; sanitation of touchpoints in the room including remote controls, lamps, etc.; and thorough bathroom disinfection are also part of the procedure.

Guests will also receive personal wellness kits, issued a UV-sanitized keycard, and arrive to guestrooms with a seal of assurance that they are the first to enter the sanitized environment. Because taking care of its own people means they can take better care of guests, The Manila Hotel has invested on testing its staff upon return to work to ensure they are healthy. The culinary team strictly adheres to stringent protocols on proper hygiene, hand washing, and food handling. Staff will be required to wear PPEs as needed, and strict implementation of distancing measures will be done in the offices, front desk, and other areas frequently by guests.

The Manila Hotel looks forward to welcoming both loyal and new guests with the kind of service it is known for, with the assurance that “YOU ARE SAFE HERE” is not just a tagline but a commitment it truly means to uphold.
