For almost two years now, most of us have been
stuck at home all day, while coping with added stress has caused several bad
habits to resurface. Some of the downstream effects of these
behaviors aren’t benign, though, and can harm our mental health, and immune
function as well, which is the exact opposite of what we’re trying to be
mindful of.
During times
of high stress, it’s common for us to return to our comfort foods. These are
foods from our childhood, family, or other emotionally soothing time in our
lives. They make us feel good by releasing neurotransmitters in the brain which
interact with our mood and sense of well-being.
And
since more time is spent at home, we’ve become successfully re-immersed in our
devices. Creating digital discipline is something we’ve been working on as a
community since learning that clicking and scrolling interact with brain
chemistry in a way that mirrors addiction.
While some of us may be relishing this at-home time, others are listlessly going about their days in limbo feeling lost and unproductive. A total departure from our scheduled routines can disrupt sleep, cause us to miss meals (or the opposite: snack all day), neglect to take medications or supplements, and generally harm our well-being.
There are also those who are starting to
feel low energy and even lower motivation. It is during these times that
we need to shift our priorities and maybe be able to make new self-discoveries.
I’ve heard of people who didn’t know a thing or two about cooking but are now
experts in the kitchen. Those who have picked up the hobby of taking care of
plants who are now considered certified plantitos and plantitas. And those
who were able to turn their hobbies into amazing businesses.
During the webinar via Zoom and LifeFood launch |
I recently attended Life Talks hosted by Boy
Abunda with the topic “Paano Magiging
Buhay na Buhay ang Buhay?” which had featured personalities such as actress
and mom of 5 Ina Raymundo who has managed to balance between caring for herself
while being busy with her responsibilities as mom and wife. Now based in
Vancouver Canada, Ina shared that despite being able to maintain her body
figure with her healthy lifestyle, she is also suffering from arthritis just
like everyone else.
TV personality Migs Bustos who’s a new father
also changed his life perception on health after he’s had his own family.

Also part of its panel of guests was an
internal medicine specialist and functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Eca
Lorenzo, MD, FPCP who was able to share so many key takeaways for living a
healthier and happier life despite the pandemic.
Host Boy Abunda with doctor panelist, Dr. Eca Lorenzo
According to Dr. Lorenzo, there are 5 frameworks
of health for functional medicine. These are nutrition (concerns what and how
you eat), movement and exercise (home workout etc.), sleep (which sadly most of
us take for granted), stress and relationships (with yourself, your family,
the food you consume, what you watch etc.) These are things that are supposed
to make you feel happy.
In order to become healthier, we need to take natural
food supplements because eating healthy foods may not be enough. During the
said webinar, LifeFood, the latest product line of Synnovate Pharma
Corporation, a naturals division of UNILAB was launched.
LifeFood natural food supplements line
The majority of Filipinos now make their health
their priority especially since it is pandemic. LifeFood is a comprehensive
line of condition-specific natural food supplements.
What’s great about LifeFood is that its products are derived from natural sources like plants or marine life, meaning, the key ingredients or active components are naturally-occurring. And what sets it apart is that its products use branded or trademark-protected ingredients that are backed by clinical research to prove their efficacy.
LifeFood Natural Health Supplements |
“We’ve especially curated our first line products to address the common health conditions of Filipinos,” says Abi Nepomuceno, Synnovate Director and Business Unit Head. “LifeFood has carefully chosen the most potent, most studied, and the highest quality ingredients to ensure that consumers get all the value and benefits each of these products provide.”
The brand has developed six kinds of natural food supplements. There’s Curcumin, which can be used for managing general inflammation to help address osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and help provide short-term pain relief for joint and back pains. LifeFood Curcumin features Meriva that makes it 29x more bioavailable. Sytrinol helps lower total cholesterol without the toxic side effects of commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Astaxanthin
is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants that can reduce the size of
wrinkles and improve skin micro-texture. It contains strong anti-aging
molecules that are 500 times stronger than Vitamin E and 6,000 times stronger
than Vitamin C. LifeFood Astaxanthin has the
highest dosage at 12mg, studied to be the most effective as a support in
preventing skin aging. Injuv contains a clinically-proven
low molecular weight hyaluronic acid that makes it easily absorbed for
younger-looking, well-moisturized skin to provide better skin hydration and
elasticity. It can also be taken by those who need to hydrate joints and other
connective tissues.
Tonalin CLA is a great choice for those who are looking for a natural weight management supplement. Combined with a balanced diet and exercise, it can help reduce up to 9% of body fat and increase the body’s total lean muscle mass.
A go-to women's health supplement, Evening Primrose Oil is a natural source of omega-6 that aids in hormonal balance. It can improve skin health, naturally address PMS symptoms, address breast pain, and help with menopause.
These natural supplements are also standardized and undergo stringent product testing following pharma standards, so consumers are assured that they are taking supplements that are not only safe but also effective in addressing the specific concerns that they have.

Lastly, here are the key takeaways i have learned during the said webinar:
Be kind to yourself. Many are struggling to navigate a completely new situation with unique stressors. We are all adapting the best way we know-how, but be gentle with the expectations you place on yourself. If you compare yourself to your previous metric of productivity and purpose, you’re likely to fall short. The ways you normally feel productive and happy may not apply right now, and that’s okay.
You are enough if you’ve
brought joy to those around you (in whatever small ways you can), taken care of
your mental well-being, and done a small favor for your physical health.
COVID-19 brings with it many
new worries, but life will go on, and so must we.
