Shangri-La Plaza spotlights Filipina creatives banding together and showcasing their experiences, stories, and creations with A Woman Unboxed at the East Atrium at 5PM in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8.
The anticipated book launch and art exhibit are the result of a remarkable partnership between writer and publisher Gayle Certeza, who is launching her book, A Woman Unboxed and Other Tales of Growing Up, and a group of talented artists.
which explores the difficulties of motherhood, dreams, and ambitions via the techniques of assemblage and collage; and mixed media artist Mimi Tecson, whose own A Woman Unboxed pieces explore the complexities of motherhood, dreams, and aspirations through the mediums of assemblage and collage.
"This book is my ode to my ancestors. It honors my grandma, my dad, and my siblings—all of the sacrifices they took to get us this far. The novel travels through wounds and sufferings. The other side is propelled by hopes, dreams, and love," Certeza says.
"With my art, I hope to address the idea of feminine identity and the obstacles that come with being a mother, such as balancing career, family, and personal aspirations. Using a range of textures, colors, and patterns. In terms of form, I want to create an environment that pushes viewers to reflect more thoroughly about women's responsibilities and expectations," Tecson says.
The event also features female writers Carissa Singson, Dina PecaƱa, Edlyn Ng Cha, Gina Verdolaga, Kat Gomez-Limchoc, Maureen Sandejas, Rose Marie Yenko, Sonia Roco, and Tweet Sering who are leading talks about inspiration, creativity, and storytelling.
