Through the years, the renowned Loboc Children’s Choir has captivated audiences far and wide with its musical genius. Having won national and international competitions and performed in front of heads of state, VIP’s and dignitaries. What began as a simple school chorus formed to add color to school and community events has grown into one of the Philippine’s most outstanding choirs today.
The Loboc Children’s Choir was founded in 1980, it is made up of thirty Loboc Central Elementary School students aged nine to thirteen. The Loboc Children’s Choir has shared its music in countless festivals and concert halls around the world and has also won numerous competitions.
The Loboc Choir became the National Champion in the category of Children’s Choirs during the National Music Competition for Young Artists in 2001. In its forty-three years of existence, the Choir has held concerts all over the country as well as in other parts of the world. They have represented the country during the International Children’s Culture and Arts Festival in Tinajin, China and serenaded Queen Sophia of Spain when she visited Manila in 2003. In 1996, in a concert dubbed, “On Angels’ Wings: From Bohol to the World,” the choir toured key cities in the United States.
In 2003, the group took home the gold medals in both the Youth Category and Grand Prize at the 6th International Folksongs Festival “Europe and its Songs” held in Barcelona, Spain. They have also performed in concerts across Europe: in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, and Switzerland. One of their most memorable performances was when they sang before Pope (now Saint) John Paul II.
Under the creative and mentoring and guidance of a team of teachers led by the accomplished maestra or conductor Alma Fernando Taldo (a fifth-grade teacher of English and Values Education from Loboc Central Elementary School) who is also the choir’s musical director and conductor, the group has gone on concert tours and also brought home trophies from international competitions. Ma’am Taldo received her first music lessons from her paternal grandfather and later from solfeggio classes. She has also attended music workshops conducted by renowned Filipino musicians Like Ed L. Manguiat of the UP Singing Ambassadors, who also serve as a consultant for the choir. Mrs. Taldo has successfully guided the Loboc Children’s Choir to where it is today with sheer skill and unselfish dedication, believing that as long as the children sing, hope exists. Their choir members are aged 9 to 16 years old. Aspiring members must undergo an audition before Mrs. Taldo.
