Stage, Screen & Everything in Between: A Night with the Ms. Lea Salonga

 

I was fortunate enough to experience a little bit of magic last November 7 at The Theatre at Solaire and the one making it all happen was none other than the Philippine’s pride, international star, Ms.Lea Salonga. Her concert was a beautiful experience entitled "Stage, Screen & Everything in Between" which showcased her brilliant voice and sense of humor.

As soon as the lights went dark, the audience was whisked away into a magical realm. The familiar (and still as strong and angelic) vocals of Lea both inspired nostalgia but also sheer wonder washed over the packed theater. Moving fluidly from Broadway icon legends like "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own" to sweet classic songs and Disney hits.

Please forgive my huge face. But I was so excited to see Lea's concert! It's something I wouldn't pass up even if I had to take a leave from work.

Lea was able to connect with the audience on a personal level, which was a highlight of the concert. She told stories about how Miss Saigon had changed her life forever & shared details behind that legendary voice. The night was also made by her humor, humility and natural warmth towards anyone who loves music. She also shared how the song “The Greatest Love of All” became her second song during her Miss Saigon Manila audition when she was only 17.

The concert was as much a treat for the eyes and mind. Clever, modern, purposeful stage design and lighting complimented the history in all aspects. The stage setup which is simple but elegant helped in bringing Lea's voice into the front. With talented singers Clay Aiken, Nyoy Volante and his wife, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante who all shared the spotlight with Lea that night, it was truly a night to remember.

It was also a case of leaving the audience wanting more at the end of the concert. A lovely encore, and a perfect bookend to a magical night from Lea. So I walked out and left, thankful to Solaire and Ms. Lianne Garciano that I just got to experience something of that caliber.

I went home that night while still on cloud nine. I even had an LSS (last song syndrome) for the entire week after. If you get to see Lea Salonga live, go for it, don't pass up! And it is a soul-deep experience you carry for life.

Special thanks to my fellow blogger, Sir Ted Claudio of wazzup.ph for giving me a ride that night. While we were driving home, Sir Ted even played "Reflection" since Lea didn't sing that song during the concert. I even brought home a signed Christmas Album of Ms. Lea called Sound of Joy. I went home so kilig that night. I've always been a Lea fan since grade school. So I was so thrilled to see her perform live in a concert. This may not exactly be the first time I saw her perform live. But seeing her in a concert where she sang some of my favorite songs was truly a dream come true.

CINEMALAYA FILMS COMPETE FOR HONORS AT THE 39TH STAR AWARDS FOR MOVIES

 

True to its mandate of promoting Philippine independent film, the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is proud to announce that four films from its extensive 2022 roster have been officially nominated for Indie Movie of the Year at the 39th Star Awards for Movies.

Among the seven films nominated for Indie Movie of the Year are four Cinemalaya 2022 films: The Baseball Player by Carlo Obispo, Blue Room by Ma-an L. Asuncion-Dagñalan, 12 Weeks by Anna Isabelle Matutina, and Bakit ‘Di Mo Sabihin by Real S. Florido. The filmmakers are also nominated for Indie Movie Director of the Year.

Awarded as the Cinemalaya 18’s Best Film, The Baseball Player follows the journey of a 17-year-old Moro child soldier whose father was killed in an all-out war in 2000 as he dreams to become a baseball player. The film also won Best Screenplay (for Carl Obispo), Best Editing (for Zig Dulay), and Best Actor (for Tommy Alejandrino).

Blue Room is about Rebel Rebel, an indie rock band composed of woke albeit sheltered teens, who gets its biggest break at a prestigious local music festival but gets arrested for drug possession after a celebratory night out at a local bar. The film won the Special Jury Award, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.

12 Weeks tells the story of a 40-year-old unmarried woman who discovers she is pregnant after ending her toxic relationship with her boyfriend Ben. The film bagged the NETPAC Award and Best Actress. It was also nominated for Best Picture at the 2022 QCinema International Film Festival.

Bakit ‘Di Mo Sabihin explores the life of deaf couple who have been struggling to keep their marriage. The Cinemalaya film won Best Actress at the Entertainment Editors’ Choice Awards.

The Cinemalaya Foundation has nurtured over 200 Filipino filmmakers and showcased over 1,000 of their works, including full-feature films, shorts, documentaries, Filipino film classics, and art films.

MakatiMed clears the air and shares daily tips on maintaining healthy lungs

 

The lungs are our lifeline, as they help us breathe and deliver oxygen to the rest of our body. In fact, we take about 23,000 breaths a day to stay alive. Yet, lung problems are on the rise in the country. According to experts from the Manila Observatory, the toll of air pollution on Filipinos is heavy, with at least 100 out of every 100,000 Filipinos dying annually because of air pollution, all of which takes a direct toll on our lungs.

Gregorio P. Ocampo, MD of the Section of Pulmonary Medicine in the top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) underscores the importance of monitoring lung health given the risks we encounter in our daily lives.

“Vehicular emissions, particularly from cars, jeeps, and tricycles during rush hour, emit significant black soot and other pollutants. Industrial pollution from factories, power plants, and agricultural burning worsens the situation,” Dr. Ocampo points out. “Exposure to air pollutants makes us more vulnerable to respiratory inflammation and infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis. They also increase the risk of developing lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer.”

While there are factors we can’t control, MakatiMed emphasizes the steps we can take to reduce the impact of air pollution on our lungs. We can start by improving indoor air quality. “Eliminate indoor smoking, invest in HEPA air purifiers, and regularly dust and change air filters. Regular pet grooming reduces dander while getting air-purifying plants like snake plants can further improve indoor air,” suggests Dr. Ocampo.

For stronger lungs, a healthy diet is also a must. Bid farewell to fried indulgences like crispy pata and salty treats like chicharon. Processed meats? They’re out, too. Their added sodium and unhealthy fats put pressure on our diaphragm, leading to bloating and straining our lungs. Dr. Ocampo adds, “Instead, embrace lung-loving fare—apples, beets, pumpkins, tomatoes, and leafy greens—packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that improve lung function, optimize oxygen intake, and slow down lung decline over time.”

Exercise also makes the lungs healthier. Aerobic activities like running, swimming, or walking improve oxygen delivery in the body. Pilates and yoga, which prioritize proper posture and breathing techniques, can also help us fully utilize lung capacity.

“These workouts include movements that strengthen core muscles, align the spine, and open up the chest, correcting or preventing slouching that’s linked to restrictive breathing,” explains Dr. Ocampo. “Even simple deep breathing exercises that engage the respiratory muscles like the diaphragm can help us master the art of proper breathing for overall wellness.”

MakatiMed also reminds us of the importance of staying up to date on vaccines for the flu and pneumonia for added protection from respiratory diseases. In addition to annual X-ray exams, individuals at high risk of lung illnesses like smokers or those who are exposed to secondhand smoke, drivers, and construction workers are advised to undergo spirometry for early detection and treatment.

“Every breath you take matters. With the growing risk of air pollution, it’s wise to prioritize lung wellness in your daily lives,” says Dr. Ocampo.
